The Mystery Of Charles Dickens

BBC Radio 4 Extra marks the 70th birthday of the distinguished actor, writer and theatre director Simon Callow.

Callow plays Charles Dickens in a drama written by Peter Ackroyd, author of a Dickens biography from 2002.

This one man play not only gives voice to Dickens, but also to 49 of his most colourful characters from Mr. Micawber to Uriah Heap.

In The Mystery Of Charles Dickens, Ackroyd weaves together elements of the author’s life, from him being declared an ‘infant phenomenon’ to the tiring and traumatic reading tours that the author undertook towards the end of his life.
