21 Again

As part of a bold new experiment for BBC Three, five fed-up daughters are sending their mums undercover as 21 year-olds, in the hope they can better understand what it’s like to be young today.

After giving their mums an epic makeover, for 21 days the daughters will immerse their mums in issues such as body image, dating, social media, gender and sexual fluidity. Can walking a mile in their daughters’ shoes help bridge the generation gap? And will it bring them closer together?

Episode one
In episode one the mums and daughters arrive in Liverpool for the start of their 21-day social experiment. To get things started the mums are sent off for an intensive make-under, which ends with emotional reveals where they show off their transformations to their daughters. As a warm up to Gen Z life, the daughters task their mums with getting to grips with selfies, social media and online dating, which leads to some of the mum and daughter pairs going on double dates by the end of the week.

Episode two
Whist continuing to try to pass for 21 year-olds, the mums find out what the world of work is like for their daughters, as they try to reconcile traditional and non-traditional ideas about working life and career options. While two of the mums go undercover to try out the seemingly glamorous life of a social media influencer, another is plunged into the unpredictable lifestyle of the gig-economy on a zero-hour contract.

Episode three
In episode three, the undercover mums are challenged by their daughters to explore gender and sexual fluidity, and have their preconceptions turned totally upside down. At a raucous Queer Bingo night they meet trans man, Charlie, and Lois, who identifies as non-binary. They party the night away at a gay bar before delivering a rousing speech at the London’s Women’s March, which is an eye-opening experience for all five of the mums. Also Devon has an emotional meet with a girl who has the same one in a million disability as her.

Episode four
In episode four the social experiment is coming to an end and the mums get a final crash course in Gen Z life, as they try out veganism, social activism and political engagement in a bid to be as ‘worldly-wise’ as their daughters. The experiment closes with one last surprise, when the mums host a birthday party, inviting everyone they’ve met over the last 21 days. The guests think it’s a birthday party to celebrate turning 22 - until all of the mums uncover their real identities...
