The Essay - Yorkshire

Novelist Andrew Martin writes five essays which detail his musings on the county of his birth and upbringing.

Monday
In his first essay, Andrew sets off on the train from London to York, on the way considering his 'tyke' identity.

Tuesday
Andrew ponders the age-old questions pertaining to Yorkshire and Lancashire rivalries - who comes out on top? He delves deep into the cultures of each region in an attempt to come up with an explanation.

Wednesday
Andrew considers questions of class in God's Own County. The author reflects on his upbringing and his own experience of class mobility.

Thursday
Andrew considers the future of Yorkshire, a county greatly steeped in tradition and in the past.

Friday
As he sits on a bench in Scarborough station for the final essay of the series, Andrew recalls the Yorkshire coast of his youth.
