Britain's Best Home Cook

Ep. 1/8 -

The search is on for Britain’s Best Home Cook, in a brand new BBC One cookery competition judged by the queen of home cooking Mary Berry, produce expert Chris Bavin, and top chef Dan Doherty. Hosted with wit and warmth by Claudia Winkleman.

The eight part series will see 10 passionate home cooks from across the country embark on the ultimate immersive cooking competition.

To win over the judges, the cooks will have to demonstrate individual flair, skill, creativity and breadth in their home cooking. Each week the judges will set two challenges – an ultimate home favourite and an improvised dish around a single ingredient - before the weakest cooks face the elimination round to decide who is going to leave the competition.

In this first episode the cooks have an hour and a half to prepare their ultimate burger with at least two sides designed to showcase their individual personality. The cooks rustle up a variety of patties with different influences, with a Welsh inspired rarebit burger, Indian spiced patty and pakoras, Nigerian suya spiced beef, Asian shredded beef in a bao bun and a plethora of cheese burgers.

Each of the judges choose their personal favourite, placing the cooks with the best burgers in an advantaged position as they get to determine one key ingredient choice for everyone in round two. This week it is either nuts or berries, opening up a world of culinary possibilities. In the Cooks’ Challenge, which tests their inventiveness and creativity, they must prepare for a dish celebrating the central ingredient selected by their fellow cook(s) without any prior knowledge of the other ingredients they’ll have in their kitchens.

Based on their performance in these two challenges, Mary, Dan and Chris decide who is safely through to next week and who must cook again in an elimination round. The judges have chosen a dish that requires precision and any lack of concentration could lead to an early exit. Who will wilt under the pressure and be sent packing leaving the remaining nine cooks to compete another week?
