Images Of Diana

Ep. 1/4 -

BBC Radio 5 live is marking the 20th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales with a look back at some of the iconic pictures of her.

She was beloved by newspaper editors, beauty writers, gossip columnists and society diarists, making her one of the most photographed figures of her time.

In some ways she was the first totally global celebrity, capturing the hearts of millions worldwide who devoured every opportunity they had to see what she was wearing, how she looked and who she was with.

In this BBC Radio 5 live series, broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky will look back at some of the most memorable shots of her, using them as a starting point to discuss Diana with those who knew her and who were there when the picture was taken.

Each programme will weave archive, eyewitness testimony and studio discussion into a portrait of a much-loved but complex woman.

The first episode recalls the famous shot of her emerging from the day nursery where she worked, just before her engagement was announced to Prince Charles, catapulting her into the public eye.

Natasha Kaplinsky hears contributions from the royal photographer Kent Gavin, the biographer Sarah Bradford and the designer of Diana's wedding dress Elizabeth Emanuel.

Images of Diana will be heard first online in a series of podcasts available from www.bbc.co.uk/5live from Sunday 30 July.

The series will begin on air on BBC Radio 5 live on Sunday 13 August at 11am and will run for four episodes.
