Hip Hop Hooray

From 7am to 7pm on Saturday 12 August, Hip Hop Hooray celebrates the music, history and stars of a scene which started over three decades ago in New York’s South Bronx.
It’s 30 years since the release of the seminal Eric B. and Rakim debut album Paid In Full, which might only have reached No. 58 in the Billboard Chart in 1987, but has since gone on to represent one of the most influential and important records from one of the golden ages of hip hop.
In celebration, BBC Radio 6 Music shows are playing back-to-back hip hop from across the genres which make up its family tree - from soul, jazz and funk to blues and disco. In addition to shows across the schedule, on the BBC Red Button in an hour-long programme - 6 Music’s Classic Hip Hop Playlist - Huey Morgan presents a look back at some of rap music’s most defining moments. The show features classic music videos from the early 1980 and 1990s from Sugar Hill Gang, Queen Latifah, A Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy among others.
Nemone’s Electric Ladyland - midnight-2am: Nemone plays DJ Shadows Master essential mix from 2016, featuring an hour of his own rare hip hop records. DJ Shadow has a renowned record collection of over 60,000 vinyls, so this mix is something very special and will feature many tracks that very few people have ever heard.
Mary Anne Hobbs – 7-10am: Mary Anne will be taking a look at the West Coast’s influence on hip hop. Her guests include Daddy Kev of the LA club night Low End Theory, that helped to launch Ellison’s career. And she’ll be talking to Harvard student, Obasi Shaw, who graduated with honours after submitting a hip-hop album as a dissertation, influenced by the sounds of Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper. And there will be archive clips from KRS One, Sugarhill Gang, Missy Elliott, Donny McCaslin, Kendrick Lamar, Arrested Development, Roots Manuva and Seun Kuti.
The Huey Show - 10am-1pm: Huey celebrates the legacy Eric B & Rakim’s landmark album, Paid In Full, with contributions from DJ Yoda, writer Brian Coleman, and Portishead's Geoff Barrow. Coldcut played a huge part in the success of the album - their remix made the title track a hit here in the UK back in the 1980s. They'll be talking to Huey about how it came about, and delivering a Paid In Full inspired guest mix for the show. Plus, Huey will be raiding the BBC's archive to pull out some vintage hip hop interviews and performances.
Liz Kershaw - 1pm-3pm: Liz chats to scene pioneers The Sugarhill Gang, renowned for their 1979 track, Rapper's Delight, which was the first rap record to become a Top 40 hit in the USA. Liz also gives listeners the chance to show off their knowledge of hip hop/rock crossover tracks, and will play tracks from Run DMC, Aerosmith and Cypress Hill.
Gilles Peterson - 3-6pm: Gilles showcases the golden age of hip hop for the crate-diggers, featuring J Dilla, Q-Tip, The Roots and Mos Def from the archive.
The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show – 6-9pm: Craig will be selecting his Top 10 original funk and soul songs that have been sampled and transformed into some of the biggest hip hop tracks of all time. Hip hop’s connection with samples is legendary, with certain funk and soul songs being chopped up thousands of times. Treats tonight include Papa Was Too by Joe Tex from 1966, sampled by the likes of Eric B & Rakim and Wu-Tang Clan and Hihache by Lafayette Afro Rock Band from 1973 used by LL Cool J and Biz Markie.
