1979 Day
The year 1979 was great for music – Talking Heads, Joy Division, Prince, The Pretenders and The Cure were among the many legendary acts to release career defining records. But 1979 was missing one thing – BBC Radio 6 Music. Therefore as part of BBC Music's My Generation season - which this month focuses on the 1970s - today from 7am-7pm the station will broadcast as it would have sounded had it been on the air in 1979.
Kicking off at breakfast with Shaun Keaveny (7-10am), 6 Music steps into a time warp and brings listeners the best alternative music from 1979. Throughout the day, presenters Shaun, Lauren Laverne (10am-1pm), Mark Radcliffe (1-4pm) and Steve Lamacq (4-7pm) will bring listeners a flavour of the late ‘70s with great records, guests, archive interviews, live sessions and more. Plus, the presenters will hear from listeners via letters, phone calls and a new piece of technology called “email” as we ask them to let us know what music they are listening to, which gigs they are attending and which forthcoming records they are most excited about… in late 1979 of course!
