The Glory Of Glam

Ep. 1/2 -

As part of BBC Music's My Generation season, which this month focuses on the 1970s, here’s another chance to hear Gary Kemp tell the story of glam.

He explores how the flamboyant style of artists such as Marc Bolan, David Bowie and Roxy Music influenced later generations of bands including his own, Spandau Ballet. Emerging as a result of rock's self-indulgent pretensions in 1970 – when psychedelia and prog rock were at their peak – glam brought a satin and sequin-fuelled return to the basics of rock 'n' roll. This programme was first broadcast in 2012.

My Generation is a year-long landmark season across the BBC charting the history of popular music from the mid-1950s to noughties. Programme highlights for this decade include Boy George’s 1970s: Save Me from Suburbia (BBC Two), Pauline Black presenting People’s History of Pop, and film-maker and DJ Don Letts presenting Skinhead (both on BBC Four), plus next week BBC Radio 6 Music turns back the clock to 1979 for one day only.
