Edinburgh International Festival 2016

Dazzling American soprano Danielle de Niese, best known for her international operatic career, makes her debut at the EIF in period-performance of Handel arias with the award-winning Dunedin Consort.

The ensemble is directed by renowned Baroque scholar Professor John Butt.

During the interval: Fortepianist Robert Levin, who appears later in this year's festival, performs Haydn's Piano Trio No 44 in E major with Vera Beths (violin) and Anner Bylsma (cello).

Tuesday: Principal Clarinettist of the Berlin Philharmonic, Andreas Ottensamer, joins forces with the young Hungarian, Kelemen Quartet, to perform chamber music by Mozart and Brahms.

Wednesday: Renowned vocal ensemble Tenebrae and director Nigel Short journey through Renaissance Spain and Italy to Germany performing the works of Victoria, Allegri, Brahms and Bruckner.

Thursday: British-born pianist and polymath, Stephen Hough, brings a programme of player-composers with spiritual overtones including Schubert, Franck, Liszt and his own Third Piano Sonata.

Friday: Czech-born mezzo soprano, Magdalena Kozena, joins with pianist, Malcolm Martineau, to sing songs by Dvorak, Wolf, Strauss, Faure and Schoenberg at the Edinburgh International Festival.

Also this week, Late Junction’s Verity Sharp is also in Edinburgh for special festival editions of Late Junction (Tuesday 11.30pm, Wednesday 11pm), and World On 3 broadcasts live from the Edinburgh Festival and Fringe with performances from Karine Polwart, Grit and Sinderins (Friday 11pm).
