5 live’s festive highlights include comedian Russell Howard’s debut on 5 live, when he will be joined by friends and family from 10am-1pm on Christmas morning.
Danny Baker will be looking back at some of his favourite guests of the year and Rob Rinder will take listeners behind the scenes of the British legal system.
Then on Boxing Day, listeners can enjoy over 12 hours of sport with top cyclist Victoria Pendleton looking back at some of the many golden moments of Rio 2016 for our Olympians and Paralympians, plus actress Erin Richards will relive Wales’ amazing journey through Euro 2016.
Boxing Day would not be complete without all the live sport action and 5 live will cover the key Premier League fixtures.
New Year’s Eve will feature a special edition of Fighting Talk with Colin Murray and his unruly panellists looking ahead to 2017, Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo reviewing their films of the year and more live football.
On January 1 the network looks back on some of the outstanding news moments of the year with Pienaar’s Politics in the morning, a special programme recorded by one of our reporters aboard a migrant rescue boat in the Mediterranean and the revealing audio diaries of three junior doctors working in some of the country’s busiest hospitals.

- 1966: I Was There, Sir Tom Courtenay looks back 50 years to the 1966 World Cup victory for England and hears amazing stories from people who witnessed it first hand, Christmas Day, 3.30-4.30pm
- Reliving the Rumble - in a special tribute to Muhammad Ali former boxing world champions Carl Froch, David Haye and Ricky Hatton review one of the greatest fights of all time, the Rumble in the Jungle, Christmas Day, 7-8pm
- Raising the Bar with Rob Rinder, ‘Judge’ Rob Rinder who has recently starred in BBC One’s Strictly returns to his day job to explore, explain and illuminate aspects of British Law including The Role of Judges and Divorce Law, Christmas Day, 10-11pm
- Olympian Victoria Pendleton in a roundup of a glorious Olympics and Paralympics for Team GB and Paralympics GB in Rio 2016, as she recalls the big golden moments, Boxing Day, 10am-12noon.
- Our Summer - the Story of Wales 2016. A BBC Radio Wales special programme reliving a thrilling campaign for the Welsh football heroes at the 2016 Euros. (First aired on BBC Radio Wales). Boxing Day, 8.30-9.30pm
- Hillsborough: Trevor and Jenni’s Journey - a BBC Radio Merseyside documentary following Trevor and Jenny Hicks, who lost their two daughters in the 1989 tragedy, as they make their painful return to the scene of the disaster, right up to the inquest verdicts in April this year. (First aired on BBC Radio Merseyside). Boxing Day. 9.30-10.30pm

- Darren Campbell’s Get Inspired. Another chance to hear Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell and Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft talk about what and who inspired them to achieve sporting glory. Darren and Hannah meet Olympic hockey champion Sam Quek, and they quiz sports chiefs on what they are doing to inspire the next generation of superstars, New Year’s Day, 12-1.30pm
- Junior Doctor’s Diaries - Another chance to hear a revealing series of audio diaries showing what life is really like for the 3 junior doctors working long hours in some of the country’s busiest hospitals, New Year’s Day 7.30-9pm
- Looking for Life - 5 live journalist Lucy Grey spent twelve days on a Médecins Sans Frontières migrant rescue boat in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya. This is another chance to hear Lucy's experience through interviews with charity workers and migrants, giving searing insight into the real life stories of those affected, New Year’s Day, 9-10pm
- 5 Life - from the struggle to conceive a child successfully to the miracle of birth, another chance to hear 5 live presenter Anna Foster's intensely personal look at family and fertility where she shared some of her own experiences as a mother of two young children. In this two-part series, 5 Life looks at the issues that face many would-be parents, shining a light on the kind of complications that many people are living through but few talk openly about, and bringing together real-life stories with the latest scientific research (Repeat). 2 January, 8.30-10.30pm
5 live Sport
5 live Sport will broadcast commentaries and updates on all the Premier League action over the festive period as well as inviting fans all over the UK to celebrate, sound off or just to have their say on award winning phone in 606 hosted by the 5 live team Robbie Savage, Jason Mohammed, Kelly Cates and Ian Wright.
On Boxing Day 5 live will provide commentary on Watford v Crystal Palace and Hull v Manchester City. More Premier League action follows on 5 live Sport throughout the rest of the Christmas and New Year period with big matches between Derby and Birmingham, Liverpool and Stoke (27 Dec) Southampton and Tottenham (28 Dec), Aston Villa v Leeds (29 Dec), Hull v Everton (30 Dec) and on New Year’s Eve Huddersfield v Blackburn, and New Year’s Day Arsenal v Crystal Palace. On Monday 2 January the station will cover Middlesbrough v Leicester and West Ham v Man Utd.
