Gilles Peterson's Musica Brasileira

Tuesday 17 June – Tuesday 8 July, 10pm

BBC Radio 2

In the build up to the 2014 World Cup, Gilles Peterson's Musica Brasileira will showcase the very best from what is arguably the world's most vibrant musical culture.

Throughout the four-part series, Gilles will lead listeners along the 'carnaval' route. From the birth of samba to the modern day mega-festivals, from the drums of Bahia to the rhythms of the 'Nordestina', the dances of Eastern Amazonia and to the punk rockers of Sao Paolo. Gilles Peterson's Musica Brasileira will be the definitive guide to the sounds of Rio's favelas, the beaches of Ipanema, Copacabana nightclubs and, of course, the Lambada.

As well as playing the best music Brazil has to offer, each episode will also look at a different part of the country - reflecting the locations of the various football venues that will be playing host to the World Cup matches.

Produced by Somethin’ Else for BBC Radio 2

Asian Network

Over on the Asian Network, presenter Noreen Khan will host a football focused quiz in her daily show (1.30-5pm) that will see her fellow network presenters go head-to-head – each one representing countries they’ve picked from a random draw. Also during the show, there will be daily World Cup themed challenges for listeners to get involved with, and Noreen will reveal some lesser known quirky facts about the footballing countries participating.

6 Music Celebrates South America

As World Cup fever gets underway, 6 Music Celebrates South America. The centrepiece of the season is Gilles Peterson’s South American Roadtrip where he will be taking listeners an audio journey through the region. Putting the spotlight on six countries, Gilles will curate a guide for each one, giving a flavour of their music scene (Saturday 14 June, 3pm). Additionally, Gilles will be co-presenting Just Like Hearing Brazil with 5 live's Jonathan Overend celebrating Brazil's two passions - music and football. Jonathan will select Brazil's best World Cup goals accompanied by an ultimate Brazilian soundtrack from 6 Music's Gilles. The programme will be broadcast on both networks (Sunday 15 June, 1pm on BBC Radio 6 Music).

From Monday 2 June, the 6 Music Early Show launches ‘Home Team Glory: World Cup 2014 Special’ with presenter Chris Hawkins challenging his listeners to help him compile the ultimate list of songs – one that mentions every single team competing in the competition. Songs might include Springsteen’s ‘Born in the USA’, Arcade Fire’s ‘Brazil’ or the Manic Street Preachers’ ‘Australia’. In his early evening show, Steve Lamacq will be running a Football Anthems World Cup celebrating the best and most interesting football songs that have made it into the charts. Starting the opening round with 16 tracks, listeners will help decide who goes through to the next stage each day through the week, building to the Friday final and the ultimate football anthem (from Monday 9 June, 4pm).

On the opening day of the World Cup, Gideon Coe’s show will feature 32 records, one from each of the countries playing in the tournament. Curated by the listeners, music will range from Afrobeat to Nederbeat via Bossa, Chanson, Tango and Popcorn (Thursday 12 June, 9pm). In 6 Mix (Friday 13 June, 10pm) Will Holland - aka Quantic, a UK musician, producer & DJ - takes listeners through some of his favourite music from Colombia and beyond. Currently based in his Sonido del Valle studio in the highlands of Bogota, Colombia, his music fuses together Latin, Soul and South American rhythm.

Cerys Matthews will be selecting her favourite music from across South America and chatting to journalist and Brazilian music expert Jody Gillett who is the daughter of the late Charlie Gillett, the esteemed world music expert, DJ and writer (Sunday 15 June, 10am).

And in the Freak Zone, presenter Stuart Maconie looks at the Brazilian counter-culture movement, Tropicália. Founded in 1967 by musicians who were frustrated by the government’s use of the nation’s traditional samba as a marketing tool, regarding any deviation from it as un-Brazilian, Tropicália merged traditional rhythms and instruments with African rhythms, Western rock ‘n’ roll and other influences, creating a unique sound (Sunday 15 June, 8pm).
