Martin Hughes-Games has become infamous with the Springwatch viewers for his never-say-die attitude on his missions - seeking out the secrets of our UK habitats by scaling windswept cliff-faces and diving into the smooth silt of a riverbed.

This year he’s is doubling the ambition. Starting at Sherborne he will head out around the country on a three-week road trip, bringing viewers live and topical reports on our UK species and the conservation efforts being undertaken to help some of them survive.

His wildlife travelogue will enable Springwatch to reflect the varied habitats that exist within the UK and that are home to a variety of very different species, not found within the Cotswold landscape.

Our variable climate also means that the same animal families experience very different lifestyles because of their location, and Martin will hopefully be able to reflect those anomalies as he travels the British Isles.

Highlights

  • A nocturnal mission in Scotland, tracking down and filming two of our most elusive mammals - pine martens and beavers.
  • A trip to a puffin colony to look at the work being done by scientists and the public to try and stop the species decline.
  • A journey to the Sicily Isles to meet the reintroduced red squirrels, a group of playful seals and a colony of Manx Shearwater.
