BBC Radio 5 live will bring all the live action and news to listeners throughout Rio 2016.

The station will build on its award-winning coverage of London 2012, capturing every detail of every key moment across the 37 hosting venues.

A presenting team of Eleanor Oldroyd, Mark Chapman, Mark Pougatch, Russell Fuller, Caroline Barker and former Olympic champion Jonathan Edwards will welcome listeners to the 17 days of comprehensive coverage.

Joining them and bringing their expert analysis are a host of ex-Olympians including Darren Campbell, Victoria Pendleton, Steve Parry, Karen Pickering, Mark Hunter and Craig Heap, alongside 5 live’s well-known commentators such as Mike Costello, Alison Mitchell, and Jonathan Agnew.

5 live’s bespoke schedule gets underway on 6 August as Eleanor Oldroyd and Mark Chapman are live in Rio kicking off the day’s events from 12pm.

Mark Pougatch then picks up the baton from the Olympic Park bringing the live evening coverage of swimming, track cycling and gymnastics.

Late-night listeners can join Russell Fuller, Steve Parry and Jonathan Edwards for live coverage from both swimming and athletics finals, plus up-to-the-minute news and reports on all the overnight events.

On 5 August Caroline Barker and John Murray provide commentary of the Opening Ceremony on Radio 5 live as well as overseeing the Closing Ceremony on August 21st.

For those unable to stay up late, Caroline will also be live from Rio every morning providing a 30-minute round-up of all the overnight action every hour for 5 live’s Olympic Breakfast (6am, 7am and 8am). This special programme will also be available to download via the BBC iPlayer Radio app to listen to again shortly after broadcast.

From 7 to 18 September, 5 live and 5 live sports extra will bring over 80 hours of live coverage from the 2016 Paralympics. Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Jonathan Overend, Gigi Salmon, London 2012 gold medal-winning cyclist Mark Colbourne, and swimmer Graham Edmunds lead the team bringing exclusive radio coverage of the Games in Rio.

Sports fans can be transported to Rio 2016 wherever they are by also listening live via the 5 live website, the BBC iPlayer Radio app and the BBC Sport app.

The best highlights and insight will be live on the ‘In Short’ section of the 5 live website and 5 live’s social media accounts will offer a unique view from behind the scenes at the Games.

5 live schedule and line-up

0600-0900 -  Olympic Breakfast, with a 30-minute round-up every hour with Caroline Barker (6am, 7am and 8am)

1200-0400 - Comprehensive live coverage of all the Rio action with Eleanor Oldroyd and Mark Chapman in afternoons, followed by Mark Pougatch in the evening then Russell Fuller, Steve Parry and Jonathan Edwards late evening and overnight.
