BBC Performing Groups
The BBC Symphony Orchestra gives 12 Proms, including the First Night, led by its Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo, and the Last Night, which sees the welcome return of conductor Marin Alsop, both alongside the BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Chorus. Other highlights include Holst’s The Planets conducted by Susanna Mälkki (27 July), Shostakovich’s ‘Leningrad’ Symphony (No. 7) under Semyon Bychkov, the holder of the orchestra’s Günter Wand Conducting Chair (31 July), and Sibelius’s Symphonies Nos. 5, 6 and 7 under Osmo Vänskä (17 August).

The BBC Symphony Chorus also performs pieces by Eric Whitacre with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (9 August) and Orff’s Carmina Burana with the BBC Concert Orchestra

The BBC Singers give six Proms, including Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo (17 July), the European premiere of Eric Whitacre’s Deep Field conducted by the composer himself (9 August) and the First and Last Nights of the Proms.

The BBC Philharmonic gives six Proms, including the world premiere of HK Gruber’s into the open … for percussion and orchestra, conducted by its Principal Guest Conductor John Storgårds (20 July), and two concerts with its Chief Conductor Juanjo Mena (1 & 13 August), as well as two Late Night Proms in collaboration with BBC Radio 4 (10 September) and the BBC Asian Network (22 July).

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra gives four Proms, including Verdi’s Requiem (2 August) and the world premiere of James MacMillan’s Symphony No. 4 (3 August), both under Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles, as well as Sibelius’s Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 conducted by Thomas Dausgaard (15 August) and Nos. 3 & 4 conducted by Principal Guest Conductor Ilan Volkov. (16 August)

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales gives six Proms, including two performances of the first ever Ten Pieces Prom (18 & 19 July), the London premiere of Qigang Chen’s Iris dévoilée conducted by Xian Zhang (29 July) and two concerts with its Principal Conductor Thomas Søndergård, the first (21 July) alongside the BBC National Chorus of Wales (who also appear in the First Night of the Proms) and the second (3 September) including the world premiere of a new work by the orchestra’s Composer-in-Association B Tommy Andersson.

The BBC Concert Orchestra gives four concerts, including the Proms premiere of Fiddler on the Roof (25 July), a Prom inspired by Sir David Attenborough’s breathtaking television series Life Story and conducted by Jeremy Holland-Smith (30 August) and the world premiere of The Lanterne of Light by its Associate Composer Guy Barker, conducted by Principal Conductor Keith Lockhart (6 September), as well as Sherlock Holmes – A Musical Mind (16 August).
