Last Night of the Proms
Sakari Oramo, Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra leads his players for the first time in the world-famous finale of the festival.
Star soloists violinist Janine Jansen and baritone Roderick Williams join in the Last Night celebrations to perform a wide range of works including Chausson’s Poème and Williams’s own arrangement of ‘Ol’ Man River’ and ‘Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho’.
Arnold’s Peterloo overture receives its world premiere performance in a new choral version with lyrics by Sir Tim Rice and the Proms marks the 50th anniversary of the film Mary Poppins with a singalong medley.
Opening with the world premiere of Gavin Higgins’ BBC commission, Velocity, the night’s festivities feature the music of one of the season’s anniversary composers, Strauss, before closing with the traditional Last Night pieces.
Proms in the Park
The Last Night of the Proms celebrations spill out from the Royal Albert Hall into all four nations of the UK on Saturday 13 September with Proms in the Park events in Belfast, Glasgow, Hyde Park and Swansea.
Earth, Wind and Fire headlines this year’s BBC Proms in the Park in Hyde Park and Rufus Wainwright, who gives his Late Night Proms earlier that week, also performs at the event which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2. Full details of all the Proms in the Park events will be announced shortly.
Highlights of the Last Night celebrations around the UK will be included as part of the coverage on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Radio 3. All four Proms in the Park events can also be watched live at bbc.co.uk/proms and on the Red Button for Virgin Tivo viewers.
Highlights from all four Proms in the Park events will be available to watch on the evening of 13 September via the Red Button for BBC viewers and there will be a special Proms in the Park highlights programme broadcast at a later date on BBC Four.
