Broadcasting the Proms
All Proms concerts can be heard live on BBC Radio 3. Throughout the 2013 festival there will also be broadcasts across BBC networks including Radio 1, 1Xtra, Radio 2, 4 Extra, 6 Music, the Asian Network and on BBC One, Two, Three and Four.
All Proms concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall are broadcast live on Radio 3 and streamed online.
All Proms are available to listen to online for seven days after broadcast and each week six concerts are repeated during afternoons on Radio 3.
As well as live broadcasts, Radio 3 provides extensive context around the festival’s concerts and accompanying events at the Royal College of Music in a wide range of Proms-related programming:
Breakfast (daily, from 6.30am) Petroc Trelawny and Sara Mohr-Pietsch present music and updates on the season.
Essential Classics (weekdays, 9.00am–12 noon) Rob Cowan and Sarah Walker recommend music and recordings to complement Proms listening.
CD Review (Saturdays, 9.00am–12.15pm) Andrew McGregor features new releases and reissues from soloists, conductors and orchestras appearing at the Proms.
Composer of the Week (weekdays, 12 noon–1.00pm) Donald Macleod explores the lives and music of some of the main composers featured in this year’s Proms.
Afternoon on 3 and Sunday Concert (weekdays, 2.00pm – 4.30pm, Sundays 2.00pm – 4.00pm) Repeat broadcasts of BBC Proms concerts.
In Tune (weekdays, 4.30pm–start of Prom) Live interviews and performances, and news surrounding the Proms season. A special outside broadcast on the First Night will feature a selection of artists and musicians from across the whole season.
Twenty Minutes Talks, interviews and features, many of the Proms Plus series, broadcast during the intervals of evening Proms.
The Proms on TV
This year there will be more Proms television broadcasts than ever before with selected Proms and highlights available across BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three and BBC Four throughout the 2013 season:
As always, the First and Last Night of the Proms are broadcast on BBC One and BBC Two.
BBC Four will broadcast regular Proms as a weekly pattern on Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings. Thursday Proms will focus on the Orchestras of the World, Friday Proms will be the home of great works and Sunday Proms will have a focus on 20th century and new music.
BBC Two will broadcast 'Highlights of the Proms' on Saturday evenings throughout the festival.
Particular highlights include the Doctor Who Prom on BBC One and the Urban Classic Prom on BBC Three.
All broadcasts are available to watch for seven days after broadcast via bbc.co.uk/proms.
The BBC Proms TV presenting team is led by Katie Derham, with Tom Service curating 20th century and new music.
