Celebrating jazz and soul greats

The BBC Proms celebrates the music of a host of jazz and soul giants in 2017.

Ella and Dizzy: A Centenary Tribute (4 August)
Celebrating the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Dizzy Gillespie, acclaimed singer Dianne Reeves (pictured) is joined by virtuoso trumpeter James Morrison and conductor John Mauceri to pay a double tribute to these jazz greats in the centenary year of their births.

Beneath the Underdog: Charles Mingus Revisited (24 August)
Following sell-out Quincey Jones and Jamie Cullum Proms last year, conductor and arranger Jules Buckley returns - with his Metropole Orkest - to celebrate the life and music of jazz giant Charles Mingus.

Swing No End (27 August)
Following their 2015 collaboration at the Proms, bandleaders Guy Barker and Winston Rollins return for a concert celebrating big band legends including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, led by singer and BBC Radio 2 presenter Clare Teal.

The Sound of Soul: Stax Records (1 September)
Jools Holland and His Rhythm and Blues Orchestra pay tribute to the legendary Stax/Volt Revue, credited for its championing of Southern and Memphis soul music. The concert marks the 50th anniversary of its first tour to the UK in 1967 and features new arrangements of hits by artists such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and Johnnie Taylor.
