Q&A with Joel Fry

Danny is a great writer so as soon as I started reading the scripts I finished them really quickly. He really captures the essence of Toke’s personality. He was a great character to play.
Tell us about the character you play, Toke.
Toke is a warehouse manager, who, unbeknownst to his colleagues and girlfriend, has an alter ego as a crime-fighting superhero by night. He does this because of things that have happened in his past, he wants to stop people doing stupid things and getting hurt. Whilst he’s doing that, he meets a girl which sets something off in his head. He starts trying to help her which isn’t easy as she’s a bit of a mess and as a result things get complicated.
What can you tell us about Toke’s secret?
He goes out at night and fights crime on the streets of Cardiff. This is all because of another thing which isn’t necessarily a secret but is very personal to him. Patrolling the streets dressed as a superhero with friends, he soon gets more than he bargained for when he meets a young homeless girl who needs his help.
Why do you think Toke keeps his alter ego a secret from everyone close to him?
Toke keeps his alter ego a secret because it’s an extreme reaction to have to the thing that has affected him in the past. He wants to have a positive effect on the world but unfortunately it doesn’t always work out well, even though Toke’s intentions are good.
What superhero would you be and why?
I’d be Doctor Manhattan, a character from the Watchman. He can do everything, he’s the best superhero. There’s no other superhero that could beat him in a fight.
What attracted you to the role?
Danny is a great writer so as soon as I started reading the scripts I finished them really quickly. He really captures the essence of Toke’s personality. He was a great character to play.
What’s the biggest lie you’ve ever told?
I wouldn’t be able to tell you as it’s clearly a secret and I don’t want to get myself in trouble! I also don’t think I can remember anyway.
