North West

Lancaster

On Friday 9 June, Get It Loud In Libraries is staging an exclusive show at Lancaster Library featuring hotly tipped artist PIXX.

Liverpool

A series of performances will be taking place to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper album. The day’s events are inspired by the John Lennon penned song Good Morning, Good Morning and highlights include: young artists from Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, 20 Stories High and LIMF will perform along the length of Church Street in the city centre; actor Paul McGann will be reading from Herman Melville at The Athenaeum; and acclaimed baritone Marcus Farnsworth will sing morning songs by Schubert, Wolf and others at The Philharmonic’s Music Room.

Manchester

On 9 June, the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital will host Zest Fest, a festival of music that is supported by LIME Arts and Music in Hospitals and will feature a Samba procession and workshop from Global Grooves, plus music played throughout the day across the hospital. Melody from CBeebies will also be visiting and joining in the fun.

Also on 9 June, a special BBC Music Day Brass Band competition celebrating the power of music will be held at Saddleworth, with highlights broadcast on Radio 2’s Listen to the Band.

On 15 June in Salford local BBC Introducing artist Claire Mooney will perform her MediaCity Tram Track, commissioned by BBC Radio Manchester.

On 15 June BBC Two in Northern Ireland will broadcast ALT@30, a specially recorded concert celebrating over 30 years of BBC Northern Irelands longest running new music programme Across The Line with performances from established and emerging acts including The Divine Comedy, Villagers, Therapy?, The Four of Us, Soak, R51 and St Sister.

BBC Radio Ulster will hold two special live broadcasts on 15 June - Sean Coyle’s show will be live from Drumcullen, Co Armagh and Hugo Duncan’s show live from Potato Festival, Co Down. Kerry Mclean’s show from Broadcasting House Belfast will also be a BBC Music Day special.

The celebrations continue across the weekend on BBC Radio Ulster. On Friday 16th June on the Jazz World show, Linley Hamilton presents a showcase of the best, young, local jazz musicians recorded in the Blackstaff Studios in Belfast. On Sunday 18 June in Classical Connections John Toal presents a showcase of the best, young, local classical musicians and in Folk Club Lynette Fay presents a showcase of the best, young, local Folk musicians, with both shows recorded in the Blackstaff studios in Belfast.

Bradford

Bradford Music and Arts Service will celebrate BBC Music Day on 15 June with a packed programme of events, including a world record attempt involving over 800 children playing the Bamboo Tamboo, music originating from Trinidad and Tobago created by hitting a bamboo shoot on the ground. There will also be musical performances including Bradford The Musical, and Bradley Johnson who was a finalist on BBC One’s Let It Shine last year.

Doncaster

On Friday 9 June, Doncaster Music Hub will look ahead to BBC Music Day at Sir Nigel Gresley Square with a mass Samba Band made up of around 300 children from ten local schools from the Doncaster Borough.

There will also be a concert celebrating BBC Music Day, featuring the Rainbow Connection choir and Doncaster’s premier Youth Orchestra: The Beechfield Youth Orchestra. On Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 June, 1100 primary school children will perform as part of a mass choir at Doncaster Dome, presented by Doncaster Music Hub.

Sheffield

Sheffield has a rich musical heritage, and on Friday 9 June, the second Sheffield Makes Music event will celebrate the upcoming BBC Music Day with 1000 musicians performing over 24 hours at various locations around the city from 8am. A number of the performances will take place in established music venues such as The Leadmill, as well as in unexpected places around the city.

Supported by the University Of Sheffield and Sheffield BID, the day has taken on a significant role in the city’s cultural calendar.

On Friday 9 June international stars Texas will be playing a unique live show at Glasgow’s iconic Barrowland Ballroom venue with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, which will be broadcast live on both BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Radio 2 between 8-9pm. The show will be hosted on the night by Vic Galloway. As a preview of the live show, Billy Sloan will present a special show on BBC Radio Scotland between 6.30-8pm highlighting some of the best live gigs. Tickets to the concert are free and hopefuls can apply through a ballot on BBC Shows and Tickets website.

On Thursday 15 June, there will be a BBC Music Day themed Get It On programme on BBC Radio Scotland, hosted by Brian Burnett (6.30-9pm).This will be followed by a live The Quay Sessions (9-11pm) presented by Roddy Hart and featuring live music including a performance from Lau. The show will also showcase Scottish music with the shortlist for the SAY Awards (Scottish Album of the Year Awards). There will also be another chance for fans to hear the Texas and BBC SSO at the Barrowlands gig.

Wales

In Wales, Horizons will be bringing special Music Day Sessions from some of the best new Welsh music artists and bands, broadcasting across Radio and Online.

BBC Radio Wales will also broadcast an exclusive concert from Pembrokeshire-born pop star Betsy, who’s risen to fame with hits Wanted More and Waiting. The concert, recorded in Newport Pembrokeshire, is broadcast as part of a special evening programme celebrating the best of Welsh music, presented by Janice Long. BBC Music Day also coincides with BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017, one of the most prestigious singing competitions in the world. BBC Radio Wales will have nightly coverage during the competition presented by Welsh tenor Wynne Evans.

BBC Radio Cymru will host a special edition of the Huw Stephens programme at 7pm, including sessions by Horizons artists.
