'One You Couch To 5K' is a nine-week plan which works on getting people to run three times a week, building up their distance each time. By the final week, the aim is to be running for half an hour, approximately 5k.

BBC Sport’s Get Inspired brought some familiar voices lending their support to the free to download app One You Couch To 5K. Participants can choose a trainer from Radio DJ Jo Whiley; comedian and actor Sanjeev Kohli; 13-time Olympic and World Championship gold medallist Michael Johnson; and comedian Sarah Millican, who will talk them through each run and spur them on every step of the way.

Michael Johnson says: “Even if you have never done any running before, Couch To 5K has helped hundreds of thousands of people get fitter and healthier, and now I will keep you even more motivated at every stage.

“It might not feel possible at the moment, but you will be amazed at how quickly you can get into running even if you haven’t used your trainers for years or feel that even jogging to the end of the road is beyond you. Being active is so important for your health at any age.”

Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of health and wellbeing at Public Health England, says: “We are delighted to be working with the BBC to help people get fit and have fun at the same time. We can’t all be Michael Johnson, but we can make small steps that can have a big impact on our health.”

Those without a smartphone can still get involved by downloading the Couch To 5K running plan on the bbc.co.uk/makeyourmove website.
