DCI Charlie Hicks (Jim Sturgess)
Charlie is charming, happy and balanced. He’s a family man with a beautiful wife, lovely kid and a baby on the way. He’s a great, committed copper. He’s also profoundly corrupt. It’s not that Hicks takes a few bribes here and there; it’s that he might be embroiled in the murder of a fellow officer, who happened to be his best friend.

DI Elaine Renko (Agyness Deyn)
Elaine is gifted, ingenious, neurotic, messed-up - and utterly incorruptible. She’s living alone in a cheap hotel after her home and almost all of her belongings were destroyed in a violent arson attack. The arsonist was Daniel, a teenage boy with a psychotic grudge. Daniel has since been committed to a psychiatric hospital. Elaine is troubled. Daniel is trouble.

Grace Morrigan (Nikki Amuka-Bird)
Grace is calculating, fiercely intelligent and dedicated to her operation. An operation with a single purpose: to retrieve the Hard Sun file. She has proved, more than once, that she will kill to achieve it. Grace is tenacious and has the vast resources of the state at her disposal. When Renko outmanoeuvres her by making part of the Hard Sun file public, an intense personal animus is born. Daniel is the pawn that Grace uses to try and manipulate Renko.

Daniel Renko (Jojo Macari)
Daniel is deeply troubled from a childhood defined by mental illness, drug abuse and a series of short stays in multiple foster homes. Renko’s involvement with Hard Sun drags him into a fight he has no place in. Renko’s fierce protectiveness of Daniel chips away at the psychotic grudge he once bore his mum, but even Renko cannot shield her son from Hard Sun and its fallout.

DCS Roland Bell (Derek Riddell)
Bell is consumed by a desire to convict Charlie Hicks for the murder of Alex Butler, but is disinterested in whether or not Hicks actually murdered him. Bell and Hicks are perpetually at odds, but his motivation for running Renko’s investigation isn’t personal - in truth, Bell is under pressure from above to send Hicks down. Bell is dry, cynical, witty, and emotionally detached from the officers he commands.

DS Keith Greener (Owain Arthur - pictured right)
A bit of a lad. A father of six and dedicated family man whose role as the group’s comedian doesn’t detract from his status as a brilliant copper. Keith knows a little something about everything.

DS Mishal Ali (Varada Sethu - pictured left)
Always gets a run in before work - and one cigarette a day when she gets home. Mishal is partnered with Keith and they have a close, sibling-like dynamic.

DS George Mooney (Adrian Rawlins)
Gentle, rather dapper, practicing Church of England and member of the National Trust, Mooney is perhaps the most earnest member of Hicks’s team and feels things deeply.

DS Herbie Sarafian (Joplin Sibtain)
A big man, built like a rower. Herbie carries himself with an air of patience and calm self-assurance. Mooney is his best friend.
