Euro 2016 - Additional programmes
In addition to all the Euro 2016 action across the BBC, four documentaries will take a new look at the most famous stories of past Euros, mark the anniversary of Euro 96 and England’s World Cup winning team of 1966, and explore Gareth Bale’s hugely successful career and his journey with the Wales team to Euro 2016 qualification.

Alan Shearer’s Euro 96: When Football Came Home (BBC One, Wednesday 1 June, 22:45*) - 20 years on from Euro 96 and the tournament when football truly came home, Alan Shearer, the Golden Boot winner, meets teammates including Paul Gascoigne, Teddy Sheringham and former manager Terry Venables to ask what could have been. In this deeply personal documentary, Alan Shearer reflects on the defining moment in his England career. He meets with Barry Davies and John Motson as they recount their favourite moments, while Frank Skinner and David Baddiel talk to Alan about the making of Three Lions and look back on the summer that defined football in the Nineties.
Thierry Henry: My France. My Euros (BBC One, Tuesday 7 June, 22:45*) is a thought-provoking BBC One documentary about the former French International, focusing on the stories of Euros gone by and the social and cultural impact football has across Europe. As Paris and the rest of France prepares to host the Euros following the recent Paris attacks, Henry explores how something as simple as football can unify a nation and bring people together to celebrate diversity.
The documentary considers the impact previous Championships have had on certain nations, from the success of Michel Platini’s French team at Euro '84 to England’s ability to unite the country without lifting the trophy in 1996. Also discussed are the remarkable tales of Denmark in 1992 and Greece in 2004, plus Spain’s first trophy in 44 years at Euro 2008, which has become part of their nation’s history and cultural identity.
Sir David Jason presents Alfie’s Boys (BBC Two, Sunday 22 May, 8pm*) the story of how Sir Alf Ramsey built a team to win the World Cup in 1966. Sir David takes us back to the changing times of the Sixties, and sets the context for the one and only time England have been at the top of world football. He charts how and why Sir Alf picked the characters he wanted and his relationship with them as they bonded into a world-class side. Featuring unseen archive from the BBC vaults, and anecdotes from Sir Bobby Charlton, Jack Charlton, Sir Geoff Hurst, Jimmy Greaves, Gordon Banks and Bobby Moore’s wife, Tina Moore, plus many other squad members, this is a definitive record of their great journey as a team.
In the build-up to Euro 2016, BBC Wales will bring a special documentary of the team’s star performer, Gareth Bale. The programme highlights Gareth’s three years in Madrid, which included a magical four trophies in his first season. Contributors include former Real Madrid star Emilio Butragueno, John Hartson, Harry Redknapp and Chris Coleman.
