In heat six, the Codougan family from Northamptonshire take on the King family from Lincolnshire

The Codougan family

“For us it’s always a party in the kitchen. We like to make it as fun and Caribbean as we can. Hopefully they’re ready for us!”

Jacqueline (45), her daughter Chantal (24) and son Dom (23) live together in Kettering, Northamptonshire. Jacqueline, one of seven children, was born on the Caribbean island of St. Vincent. Jacqueline is very close to her mother and spent a lot of her time in the kitchen. Many of Jacqueline’s recipes and ingredients are influenced by recipes handed down from generation to generation.

Chantal has worked as a portrait artist and Dom is a mobile barber. He describes his family as “a pack of lions” - each being strong-minded and fierce but having their own roles. Jacqueline is the chief cook; Chantal is in charge of seasoning; and Dom is the practical one. They love nothing more than dancing around the kitchen together.

The King family

“Our family motto is backbone. We don’t like any wimpish-ness, we like to get on with it.”

Pat (67) and Mark (68) from London have been married over 40 years and are regular visitors to the home of their daughter Jackie (38) in Lincolnshire. Pat had a party planning business for many years organising events and weddings, but has scaled back on work to spend more time with her grandchildren.

Mark owns a property investment company and Jackie is one of his employees. The two work really well together despite Jackie joking that he is a terrible boss. Jackie lives in Lincolnshire with her husband, a potato farmer, and their three young children.

Mark and Jackie both agree that Pat is the best cook out of the family.

Before Pat married though, she could not even boil an egg. Her love of cooking grew over years of practice and she soon developed a great enthusiasm for entertaining and took pride in the presentation of her food. Mark’s passion for cooking only started a few years ago. He enjoys going to his local fishmongers, butchers and greengrocers to buy fresh ingredients for his dishes.
