The Boyes family

“We’re definitely show offs in the kitchen, we’ve got three stoves, eleven ranges and probably every gadget and gizmo under the sun.”

David (46), his partner Sam (37) and Dave’s daughter Ellie (17) come from Liverpool.

David works as a funeral director and loves his job, having always wanted to work in the industry. He lives with Sam, a hairdresser, above the salon they own. Ellie is currently at college and works in the hair salon at the weekend.

One wall of their kitchen is dedicated to a whole host of spices they have collected together over the years. They also own more than 100 cook books and buy weekly cooking magazines for inspiration. Both men love cooking gadgets and regularly order the latest cooking gizmo.

David and Sam enjoy eating in the finest restaurants and then go home and try to recreate the dishes they have eaten but with their own twists. Dave is extremely proud of his homemade pork pies and scotch eggs, which he hands out in the salon, which are getting quite the reputation in the area.

The Rignall family

“We’re a really close family. We speak on the phone sometimes and it is just about food, to say what you cooking tonight?”

Cousins Sunita (38) and Usha (33) are the new generation cooks in their family and love experimenting with food. Usha and her mum Jassi (65) are regular visitors to Sunita’s house in Buckinghamshire, with Jassi being the traditional cook on the team and believing she makes the best pakoras out there.

Jassi grew up in Africa, living in Uganda, Kenya and Zambia, and came to the UK in her 20s. She draws inspiration from this early part of her life when in the kitchen. In her youth Jassi used to be a party animal, even now Usha says she’s always trying to get her mum to behave.

Usha juggles her passion for cooking alongside being a mum, part-time long-haul flight attendant and training to be a yoga instructor. She finds food inspiration from the many countries she travels to with work.
