Following on from a hugely successful World Cup, BBC Radio 5 live once again offers audiences unrivalled live football commentary of the 2014/15 season, with the most extensive rights portfolio of any UK broadcaster. This includes Saturday lunchtime kick-offs for Premier League matches, first choice Saturday 3pm and Sunday 4pm’s plus Monday and Tuesday night matches.
In a year that sees the FA Cup return to BBC Television, Radio 5 live continues its longstanding relationship with the tournament providing comprehensive coverage throughout with news, debate and live commentary.
BBC Radio 5 live sports extra continues to be the go-to station for women’s football with continued live commentaries from the Super League until the end of the current season – full details under the Women’s Football page.
All this combined with live rights to Champions League, Europa League, the League Cup, Home Nations’ Internationals, Scottish Premiership and Championship makes for a packed year of football commentary available for fans.
5 live’s impressive pundit roster is boosted this year by Philip Neville, Jason Roberts and Danny Murphy featuring across the output, joining the team of expert names on the station.
Former England international and ex-Manchester United player and coach Philip Neville will join the 5 live line-up for this season, alongside his TV duties for Match of the Day, featuring on live radio commentary and as a studio guest. Former Premier League striker Jason Roberts takes on an expanded role within the 5 live team, working as a summariser for live football commentary, as well as presenting football shows on 5 live sports extra. Former England international and MOTD pundit Danny Murphy will also feature at points during the year on radio output.
With Mike Ingham retiring at the end of the World Cup John Murray takes on the role of Football Correspondent for the station. John has been a mainstay of the 5 live commentary team for many years and is a natural successor to the role. John continues to lead on commentary alongside Alan Green with Ian Dennis, Conor McNamara and Alistair Bruce-Ball.
Mark Chapman, Mark Pougatch and Eleanor Oldroyd continue as main presenters of 5 live Sport, Monday through to Saturday. Sunday’s programme will be presented by Jonathan Overend. Caroline Barker hosts the Non League Show (Sundays 5.00am – 6.00am and available on podcast), with the best guests and latest news from the world of grassroots football. Caroline will also will be a regular part of the 5 live football presentation team across the station.
5 live Sport (Saturday afternoons and Weekday evenings) remains the go-to place for live football commentary, news, debate and analysis featuring a wide range of guests, journalists and pundits. Live football commentary starts on Friday 8th August with Blackburn v Cardiff in the Championship, with the first Premier League commentary taking place on Saturday 16th August, Manchester United v Swansea kicking off at 12.45pm.
Charlotte Green returns to her role on the iconic Sports Report after a hugely successful first season, 5-6pm Saturdays, with the weekly football results, and 606 is again presented by Darren Fletcher and Robbie Savage on Saturday and Kelly Cates and Ian Wright on Sunday, bringing all the talk from the fans through the season, both nights 6.06pm-7.30pm.
