Ten passionate amateur artists from a variety of backgrounds undertake an intensive six-week artistic boot camp in a bid to perfect their skills and be crowned overall champion. The contenders will be divided into two groups of five, and guided through the five painting challenges in separate studios by one of the two mentors, Pascal Anson or Diana Ali, replicating the Atelier System which produced artists such as Leonardo da Vinci.

In each episode the artists are asked to produce a piece of work in a different discipline, with the finished products exhibited and judged by members of the public as well as the judges, Dr. David Dibosa, Daphne Todd OBE and Lachlan Goudie, who will make the ultimate decision on which candidate is eliminated.

The Big Painting Challenge is a BBC Studios production. The Executive Producer for the BBC is Claire Paterson. The Series Editor is Meriel Beale. The Producer is Bex Hevingham. The Producer/Directors are Emma Peach and Lyndon Tovey. It was commissioned by Mark Bell, Head of Arts Commissioning.
