BBC Sport releases invitation to tender for Sports Personality of the Year
BBC Sport today released the invitation to tender for BBC Sports Personality of the Year - the first of its programmes to be put out for competitive tender as part of the Charter requirement to open up more of the BBC’s TV programmes to competition.

BBC Sports Personality of the Year is a prime time, flagship BBC One show which is loved by audiences and sports stars alike. We are constantly striving to improve the show and this will be a great opportunity to evolve it further
The ITT has been published on the BBC website and includes the event management and TV production of the main show on BBC One in 2019, 2020 and 2021 with an option for a two year extension at the BBC’s discretion. BBC Sport invites pitches from all producers and a full list of eligibility criteria and requirements has also been published. The production must qualify as an ‘out of London’ production in line with established Ofcom guidance in this area.
The programme will continue to be shown on the BBC and the tendering process will decide which supplier makes the programme.
Barbara Slater, Director BBC Sport, says: “BBC Sports Personality of the Year is a prime time, flagship BBC One show which is loved by audiences and sports stars alike. We are constantly striving to improve the show and this will be a great opportunity to evolve it further."
BBC Sport's tendering of Sports Personality of the Year forms part of the Compete or Compare strategy launched by the BBC in 2014, which underlined the BBC’s commitment to commission the best programmes for audiences, regardless of who makes them. The requirements for each tender are communicated at the time of publication, with enough time for suppliers to do appropriate research and preparation.
