BBC Gaeilge launches new digital education series for Irish language students

The series focuses on Unit 3 - Extended Writing - and provides analysis, tips, hints and advice to support students in preparation for the exam.

Céim in Airde provides materials which aid students and teachers to achieve the key learning outcomes of the revised GCE A2 specification.

Produced by BBC Gaeilge, Céim in Airde talks with current teachers and lecturers who have an expertise in the area of Irish literature. Each 30-minute digital programme has accompanying notes to support the A2 Unit 3 syllabus.

Through these notes and audio clips, Céim in Airde is a great extra in essential revision support for Irish A2 Literature.

The seven programmes will be available from 1 May 2019, on: bbc.co.uk/gaeilge via its Oideachas/Education page.

“In keeping with BBC Northern Ireland’s commitment to support schools, BBC Gaeilge recognise the need to support teachers and pupils in the Irish language,” says Céim in Airde presenter, Conall Ó Máirtín.

“As a former teacher I know that quality resources to aid teaching and revision are in great demand and with the changes in the specification for Irish A Level, BBC Gaeilge wants to support those learning the language as they seek to gain academic qualifications in the subject.

“Very often those learning the language find literature tough and we hope that we have created a resource that will help pupils and teachers get ready for their exams.

“Our content and study notes will enable students to have their study content on their mobile devices, allowing them to take the classroom with them as they finalise their preparations for their exams.”

BBC Gaeilge Assistant Editor, Róisín Kelleher, says: “This is a short education series for those wishing to raise their heads from the books for a while, and also forms part of our ongoing and longstanding commitment in BBC Gaeilge to provide specialist educational content and relevant supporting material.”

• Programme 1 - Anam na Teanga, Padaí de Bléine (lecturer in St Mary’s University College, Belfast) and Dónal Ó Néill (teacher at Coláiste Feirste, Belfast) take us through the short stories An Beo by Liam Ó Flaithearta, An Cumann by Péigí Rose and Nóra Mharcais Bhig by Pádraic Ó Conaire.
• Programme 2 - Padaí de Bléine (lecturer in St Mary’s University College, Belfast) and Dónal Ó Néill (teacher at Coláiste Feirste, Belfast) take us through the short stories An Gadaí by Pádraig Mac Piarais, Athair by Micheál Ó Conghaile and Na Déithe Bréige by Fionntán de Brún.
• Programme 3 - Teachers Ciara Nig Aodha at St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook and Annie Clarke at St Dominic’s in Belfast provide analysis of Cathal Ó Searcaigh’s poetry, Níl aon Ní, An Tobar and Caoineadh.
• Programme 4 - Teachers Ciara Nic Aodha at St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook and Annie Clarke at St Dominic’s in Belfast provide analysis of Máirtín Ó Direáin’s poetry, Faoiseamh a Gheobhadsa, Cuireadh do Mhuire and Stoite.
• Programme 5 - Translator Gráinne Ní Ghilín and Ulster University lecturer, Dr Niall Comer, provide analysis of Seán Ó Ríordáin’s Fill arís, Tost and Rian na gCos.
• Programme 6 - Translator Gráinne Ní Ghilín and Ulster University lecturer, Dr Niall Comer, provide analysis of Máire Mhac an tSaoi’s, A Fhir dar fhulaingeas, Jack and Gráinne.
