BBC Cymru Wales unveils major new apprenticeship and training scheme

BBC Cymru Wales has announced plans to offer 300 training places as part of efforts to recruit and develop a new generation of content-makers in readiness for the move to its new home in Central Square in Cardiff.

The new scheme - announced as part of National Apprenticeship Week - will also see the creation of 20 new full-time journalism apprenticeship and trainee placements.

In response to rapid changes in the media sector, BBC Wales has been working with the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), Creative Skillset and the Welsh Government to develop Wales’s first entry-level (level 3) Diploma in Journalism.

This new apprenticeship will be delivered through Cardiff and Vale College in partnership with the BBC Academy, with a focus on attracting people from under-represented communities. Initially ten apprentices will be recruited with applications opening later this year. BBC Wales will begin to move to its new home in Cardiff city centre in Autumn 2019.

The apprenticeships will be part of a wider package of up to 300 new training places created by BBC Wales to support recruitment to news, sport and radio posts. The first training opportunities will be available from Autumn 2018.

“It’s vital that we promote greater diversity across the creative industries in Wales and this new programme will help turbo-charge our efforts. The scheme will also play an important role in strengthening journalism training in Wales.”

Principal of Cardiff and Vale College, Kay Martin, says: “Cardiff and Vale College is delighted to have joined forces with the BBC to develop and design an apprenticeship programme for journalists. The College has a long history of working with the BBC to provide work based learning opportunities for young people in Creative and Digital Media. That apprenticeship has become an essential part of BBC Cymru Wales’ new entrant policy, so this is an excellent opportunity to develop our long-standing relationship with one the largest employers in the country.

“CAVC will work closely with Cardiff University which, as home to the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, has a long-established and extremely well respected reputation for its expertise and experience in delivering journalism courses, as well as the BBC and other local universities to deliver this exciting new apprenticeship opportunity for young people across the UK.”

BBC Cymru Wales currently offers around 25 apprenticeships per year. The new apprenticeships will be additional to these.

Details regarding how to apply for the first training opportunities will be published by the summer of 2018.

Ar drothwy symud i’w cartref newydd yn Sgwâr Canolog Caerdydd, mae BBC Cymru Wales wedi cyhoeddi cynlluniau i gynnig 300 o leoedd hyfforddi fel rhan o ymdrech i recriwtio a datblygu cenhedlaeth newydd o wneuthurwyr-cynnwys.

Bydd y cynllun newydd - a gyhoeddwyd fel rhan o wythnos genedlaethol prentisiaethau - hefyd yn creu 20 o leoliadau prentisiaeth a hyfforddiant newydd a llawn amser mewn newyddiaduraeth.

Mewn ymateb i newidiadau cyflym yn y maes, mae BBC Cymru wedi bod yn gweithio gyda’r Cyngor Cenedlaethol ar gyfer Hyfforddi Newyddiadurwyr (NCTJ), Creative Skillset a Llywodraeth Cymru i ddatblygu Diploma lefel mynediad (lefel 3) mewn Newyddiaduraeth, y cyntaf o’i fath yng Nghymru.

Bydd y brentisiaeth newydd yn cael ei darparu gan Goleg Caerdydd a’r Fro mewn partneriaeth â BBC Academy gan ganolbwyntio ar ddenu pobl o gymunedau sy'n cael eu tangynrychioli. Bydd deg o brentisiaid yn cael eu recriwtio i ddechrau gyda cheisiadau’n agor yn ddiweddarach eleni. Bydd BBC Cymru yn dechrau symud i’w cartref newydd yng nghanol dinas Caerdydd yn hydref 2019.

Bydd y prentisiaethau’n rhan o becyn ehangach o hyd at 300 o leoedd hyfforddi newydd a sefydlir gan BBC Cymru i gefnogi recriwtio i swyddi newyddion, chwaraeon a radio. Bydd y cyfleoedd hyfforddi cyntaf ar gael yn hydref 2018.

“Mae’n hanfodol ein bod ni’n hyrwyddo mwy o amrywiaeth ar draws y diwydiannau creadigol yng Nghymru, a bydd y rhaglen newydd hon yn helpu i roi hwb i’n hymdrechion. Bydd y cynllun hefyd yn chwarae rhan bwysig mewn cryfhau hyfforddiant newyddiaduraeth yng Nghymru.”

Meddai Pennaeth Coleg Caerdydd a'r Fro, Kay Martin: “Mae Coleg Caerdydd a'r Fro yn falch o gydweithio â’r BBC i ddatblygu a chynllunio rhaglen brentisiaeth i newyddiadurwyr. Ar hyn o bryd mae BBC Cymru yn cynnig tua 25 o brentisiaethau bob blwyddyn. Bydd y prentisiaethau newydd yn ychwanegol i’r rhain.

Bydd manylion ynglŷn â sut i ymgeisio am y cyfleoedd hyfforddi cyntaf yn cael eu cyhoeddi erbyn haf 2018.
