Dan McGolpin, Controller of BBC Programming and Daytime has commissioned the next generation of factual and factual entertainment shows for BBC One Daytime.

In Home Is Where the Art Is, presented by Nick Knowles, amateur artists compete to win a special new commission for one paying homeowner. Three artists, whose skills range from everything from painting, metal work and embroidery to woodcarving and ceramics will get to snoop around a Mystery Buyers’ home before pitching their ideas. But which one will hit the brief and bag the commission?

The Customer Is Always Right is an exciting new series that follows budding entrepreneurs from across the UK as they try to make a success of their inventions. They are making everything from pet accessories to health and beauty products, home and garden tools to children’s gadgets. But would anyone want to buy these items? And did they think to ask potential customers’ opinions about their products before they went and made 200 of them?

In The Best House In Town proud homeowners who go the extra mile to make their houses stand out from the crowd will compete, with the judging done by their knowledgeable 'nosy neighbours'.

In Britain’s Housing Scandal Matt Allwright is on a journey to seek out the UK’s empty homes and tell their stories. Matt will expose the scandal of houses lying empty whilst everyday families are homeless. His mission is to help pair empty houses with people who desperately need a home - to change their lives for the better.

In factual series Defenders UK BBC One will reveal the work of multiple agencies, councils across the UK who crack down on the crooks, cheats and conmen who endanger our health, our safety and our homes.

And finally, Chef Paul Ainsworth and Irish cookery school owner and home cook Catherine Fulvio will host the Best Christmas Food Ever showcasing the ultimate festive food experience, to broadcast in the two weeks before Christmas. They will be preparing dishes which capture the essence of Christmas, exploring the tastes that define the season, with celebrity guests dropping in for each episode to enjoy a dish that has a festive meaning for them.

Dan McGolpin, Controller of BBC Programming and Daytime, says: “We’re creating a new generation of daytime television programmes for BBC One, they are modern, accessible and relevant to viewers all around the UK.”

Home Is Where The Art Is

Afternoons, (15x45’)

Home Is Where The Art Is is inspired by the real world trend of commissioning artwork. Rather than spending money on ‘off the shelf’ pieces from the high street this series will show how accessible and easy it is to commission local artists to create beautiful, bespoke art for the home. Each episode will see three artists, who work in completely different disciplines, from sculpture to screen printing to needle-work and wood carving.

The one thing they’ll have in common is a desire to win a commission from their Mystery Buyers. But before they meet their potential new clients, all three artists will get to snoop around their home and work out who they are and what they might like based on their personal belongings and the brief they’ve left behind. If the artists are successful and correctly identify their taste and personalities, it could help them formulate ideas that will appeal to the Mystery Buyers, but if they fail, it could cost them the commission.

Home Is Where The Art Is is produced by BBC Studios. Created by Pam Cavannagh and Damon Pattison. The Executive Producer is Dympna Jackson. The BBC Commissioning Editor is Alex McLeod.

The Customer Is Always Right

Afternoons, (15x45’)

Each episode of The Customer Is Always Right will feature three entrepreneurs, all in their first year of starting, showing us the blueprints and prototypes of their inventions. Audiences will hear about the inspiration behind their creation and the sacrifices they had to make in getting their dream item funded and brought to market.

Crucially, their new products will be tested on the people who are most important - the customers. So often overlooked, they are the people who will make or break a business with constructive and critical feedback. There will be a cast of returning customers, all with different points of view, who are ready to road test the entrepreneur’s products and unleash their honest thoughts on everything from the design to the practical use to the selling price. They’ll unbox and deliver their honest, funny and sometimes brutal assessments before scoring each product. And because the customer is always right, they will pick the winner.

The Customer Is Always Right is produced by Firecracker. The Executive Producer is Elspeth O’Hare. The BBC Commissioning Editor is Muslim Alim.
