New reporter team to enhance coverage of local democracy across Wales
A new team of journalists is to be appointed across Wales to improve the reporting of Wales’ 22 local authorities in a new deal announced today between the BBC and local media organisations.

This is an important partnership which will significantly improve the reporting of local authorities and public institutions across Wales. It will enhance democratic scrutiny and improve the accountability of local decision-makers to the communities they serve.
The 11 reporters - each one reporting on two councils - will cover local authority work in every part of Wales. The BBC is funding the new initiative and the contracts in Wales have been awarded to Trinity Mirror and Newsquest following a competitive tendering process.
All the stories produced by the new team will be shared openly with a range of qualifying media organisations across Wales, including local newspapers and the BBC.

It will enhance democratic scrutiny and improve the accountability of local decision-makers to the communities they serve.”
As part of its Charter commitment, the BBC is investing up to £8 million per annum in the Local News Partnerships across Wales, England and Scotland during the next nine years to the end of the Charter. The scheme will employ an initial 144 full-time and two part-time Local Democracy Reporters allocated to 58 news organisations across the three countries. The news organisations range from a radio station to online media companies and established regional newspaper groups.
To be awarded the democracy reporter contracts, the 58 successful news organisations had to pass stringent criteria which included financial stability and a strong track record of relevant journalism in the area they were applying to cover. The award decisions were made by senior editorial BBC figures across England, Wales and Scotland.
The next step will be for the successful organisations to start recruiting, with a view to becoming operational in the next few months.

Tim o ohebwyr newydd i gryfhau'r sylw i ddemocratiaeth leol ar draws Cymru
Bydd tîm newydd o newyddiadurwyr yn cael ei benodi ar draws Cymru i gryfhau’r sylw i weithgaredd y 22 awdurdod lleol ar draws y wlad, yn dilyn cytundeb newydd rhwng y BBC a sefydliadau newyddion lleol.
Fe fydd yr 11 newyddiadurwr - bob un yn adrodd ar waith dau gyngor - yn gohebu ar waith awdurdodau lleol ym mhob rhan o Gymru. Mae’r BBC yn ariannu’r cynllun newydd ac mae’r cytundebau yng Nghymru wedi eu dyfarnu i Trinity Mirror a Newsquest yn dilyn proses dendro gystadleuol.
Caiff yr holl straeon sy’n cael eu cynhyrchu gan y tîm newydd eu rhannu yn agored gydag ystod o sefydliadau newyddion cymwys ar draws Cymru, gan gynnwys papurau lleol a’r BBC.

Fel rhan o’i ymrwymiad yn sgîl y Siarter, mae’r BBC yn buddsoddi hyd at £8 miliwn y flwyddyn yn y Bartneriaeth Newyddion Lleol ar draws Cymru, Lloegr a’r Alban dros y blynyddoedd nesaf hyd ddiwedd y Siarter. Fe fydd y cynllun yn cyflogi 144 gohebydd Democratiaeth Lleol llawn-amser a dau rhan-amser wedi eu dyrannu rhwng 58 sefydliad newyddion ar draws y tair gwlad. Mae’r sefydliadau newyddion yn amrywio o orsaf radio i gwmnïau cyfryngau arlein a grwpiau papur newydd sefydliedig.
Er mwyn dyfarnu’r cytundebau gohebu ar ddemocratiaeth, bu raid i’r 58 sefydliad newyddion llwyddiannus ymgyrraedd â meini prawf llym gan gynnwys sicrwydd ariannol ac enw da am newyddiaduraeth perthnasol yn yr ardal benodol honno. Gwnaethpwyd y penderfyniad i ddyfarnu’r cytundebau gan uwch olygyddion y BBC ar draws Cymru, Lloegr a’r Alban.
