Tickets might be selling out, but one lucky Blue Peter viewer will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to design the mascots for this year’s hottest sporting spectacle. The IAAF World Championships London 2017 and World Para Athletics Championships will be taking place this summer and sporting legends Jessica Ennis-Hill and Richard Whitehead MBE will be leading the search and casting their experienced eyes over the entries.

Blue Peter viewers will have the responsibility of designing and naming two great mascots that are original, unique characters who are passionate about athletics - one for the IAAF World Championships London 2017 and one for the World Para Athletics Championships. The lucky winner will get tickets to the events and see their mascot designs brought to life in front of thousands of people.

Jessica Ennis-Hill says: "This is such a great way to get kids excited about sport; they’ll need to be creative, whilst showing their passion for athletics. I can’t wait to see the winner’s designs cheering on the likes of Mo Farah and Usain Bolt on the world’s biggest sporting stage this year."

Richard Whitehead MBE says: "This is the first year the IAAF World Championships and World Para Athletics Championships will be held in the same city, in the same year. We definitely need some seriously impressive mascots to support this and what better than for them to be designed by the very creative Blue Peter viewers!"

Blue Peter is a trailblazer in inspiring the next generation of sporting talent. The long-running children’s TV show has awarded over 10,000 Blue Peter Sport badges in the last year to viewers who have inspired a friend to take up a new sport.

Ewan Vinnicombe, Editor, Blue Peter, says: "This competition pays homage to those Blue Peter Sport badge winners who have shown unequivocal enthusiasm whilst inspiring their friends and family to take up sport. Our viewers have continuously shown their creativity and innovation when tasked with extraordinary opportunities and I know that these new mascots are going to be the finest supporters to our sporting heroes."
