BBC World Questions Comes to Mexico City
The BBC World Service is holding a series of debates across the world in a time of change. BBC World Questions - an international series of English language events created with the British Council - allows the public to question their politicians, leaders and opinion formers directly face to face. The debates are led entirely by questions from the audience, who are able to have their points heard around the world.

As the country starts gearing up for next year’s elections, this is an exciting time to bring BBC World Questions to Mexico
On 5 December, BBC World Questions comes to Mexico City to host a debate on the country’s political and economic future.
With a general election on the horizon, Mexicans will soon take to the polls to decide who is to become their new President - and which direction the country should now take.
The Mexican economy is currently the 13th largest in the world, and Mexicans have recently enjoyed a period of unprecedented economic stability. But many feel that all that is about to change and there is uncertainty about how Mexico can engage with its neighbours - and the USA's President Trump.
There is doubt about the future of the NAFTA trade agreement, which has helped boost jobs and investment for Mexicans, and what Mexico will do about the challenges of inequality, corruption and violence.
Chairing the debate at the Museo Memoria y Tolerancia, the BBC’s Jonathan Dimbleby will be joined by a panel of leading politicians and thinkers who will be taking questions from the audience.
The panellists are:
- Denise Dresser, writer and academic
- Valeria Moy, economist
- Senator Armando Rios Piter, Independent Presidential candidate
- Andres Rozental, former Mexican ambassador and former Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations
Mary Hockaday, Controller BBC World Service English, says: “This is an exciting time to bring BBC World Questions to Mexico as the country starts gearing up for next year’s elections. Debate is at the very heart of BBC World Service and this is a chance for the audience to put their questions to a panel of Mexican politicians, thinkers and opinion formers, and have their voices heard across the globe.”
Kevin Mackenzie, Country Director British Council in Mexico, says: “The British Council has made a significant contribution to the cultural exchange between the UK and Mexico. As we develop friendly knowledge and understanding between our countries, it's imperative we maintain an open dialogue on how to improve the lives of our societies for a prosperous future.
"World Questions represents an excellent opportunity to understand and discuss the current issues the country faces ahead of interesting challenges and we couldn’t be more excited to be part of that conversation."
BBC World Questions is an English language event, created in partnership with the British Council and will be recorded for radio broadcast worldwide.
The programme will be recorded in English on 5 December at the Museo Memoria y Tolerancia (Museum Of Memory And Tolerance) at 6.30pm.
