BBC takes festive viewing treats to the streets with red carpet cinema tour of northern towns and cities

The BBC is wrapping up some festive TV treats and hitting the road in the country’s only mobile cinema to bring a raft of red carpet premieres to towns and cities across the North of England over the Christmas holiday period.

We can’t wait to hit the road and bring this wonderful seasonal programming direct to audiences in such a unique way.
— Pat Connor, Head of Development and Events, BBC England

Starting in Carlisle in Cumbria and welcoming the New Year in Hull as the East Yorkshire city begins its year as UK City of Culture 2017, the 100-seat touring cinema will visit nine northern towns and cities to spread a little seasonal cheer and show some of the BBC’s most eagerly-awaited festive TV.

The public will be invited to roll-up, hit the red carpet and enjoy a festive feast of BBC viewing from the comfort of the mobile movie bus. They will be able to see sneak previews of specially-selected Christmas and New Year premieres and catch up with BBC favourites from children’s content to drama and natural history.

With the content tailored to each different location, general screening highlights will include: a preview of CBBC’s much-anticipated new series of children’s classic The Worst Witch; an exclusive peek at the annual CBeebies Christmas special, this year a reworking of The Nutcracker; a seasonal visit to Call The Midwife, which sees the nuns help a hospital in South Africa; a chance to have a ‘khan-derful Christmas’ with community leader Mr Khan and his family in the Citizen Khan Christmas Special; a peep at one of the jewels of the BBC’s Christmas crown - the animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes; the brand new Sally Wainwright film about the Yorkshire’s famous Bronte family To Walk Invisible, and a look at the extraordinary wild inhabitants of a small village in France in Wild Tales from the Village made by the BBC’s world-famous Natural History Unit.

Pat Connor, Head of Development and Events, at BBC England, says: “We can’t wait to hit the road and bring this wonderful seasonal programming direct to audiences in such a unique way. The cinema will be in highly accessible locations near shopping areas and a couple of coastal locations so we hope members of the public will join us to take a welcome time-out from the cold weather and the running around that Christmas and the New Year often involves to enjoy some exclusive BBC content.”
