BBC Wales launches Tower project to tell the story of a high-rise council estate

BBC Radio 1Xtra, Radio 2 and BBC News Online join partnership to capture life in Cardiff’s Butetown.

Tower, which starts on Monday 11 April, is a week of events, programmes and social media activity to hear the voices of people who live in and around the tower blocks in Butetown, once known as Tiger Bay.

Highlights include:

1Xtra’s DJ Target leading music workshops and panels in Butetown, before showcasing local talent on his Sunday night show.
DJ Charlie Sloth presents his 1Xtra show live from the estate (Thursday, 4pm – 7pm)
Jeremy Vine to broadcast four documentaries about people from Butetown on his Radio 2 lunchtime show. (Monday – Thursday, 12pm – 2pm)
Photographer Warren Orchard commissioned to produce Humans of Butetown social media photo project.
Authored reports from Butetown residents on BBC Wales Today (Friday 6.30pm, BBC One Wales) and Radio Wales’ Good Morning Wales programme.
‘Butetown at the BBC’ community cinema night, with local highlights from BBC television archives.
Radio Wales Sport broadcast live from Butetown Community Centre with special guests (Wednesday, 7pm)

Scrum V rugby anchor Ross Harries and weather presenter Behnaz Akhgar will also be taking part in a ‘How to get into TV’ workshop, while BBC Wales and 1Xtra will hold a social media seminar for young people.

Butetown, which is less than a mile from the National Assembly of Wales, is one of the most culturally diverse places in Wales, but also experiences high levels of social deprivation. Community leaders and local cultural groups have worked with BBC Wales to organise the programme of events.

Tower is the brainchild of BBC Wales Today producer Chris Walsh-Heron, who is now co-ordinating the project.

“Estates like Butetown are often talked about, but rarely heard from,” he said. “In the past, we may have been guilty of type-casting these communities. You could understand it if local people didn’t trust us – they might feel we have already made our minds up about them. We hope Tower will change that by telling amazing stories about Butetown through the voices of people who live there.”

The Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 will broadcast four short documentaries, exploring crime, disability, multiculturalism and regeneration through the lives of four Butetown residents.

Jeremy Vine commented: "This was a fascinating trip for me. The world thinks of Cardiff as the refurbished Bay Area, but we went behind it to a community where there is no picture-postcard scenery - instead, it's hard living in high rises but with a lot of love and history thrown in. Welcome to Butetown, the land the developers forgot."

1Xtra’s DJ Target, who is hosting outreach events in Butetown to promote and support new talent, said: “As someone who lives for searching out the most exciting new music from around the UK, it's always a thrill to get the chance to actually travel and meet local artists and musicians. Growing up on a council estate is something I relate to, and I think Tower is exactly the sort of project a place like Butetown can massively benefit from.”

Gallech ddeall os na fyddai pobl leol yn ymddiried ynom ni - efallai eu bod yn teimlo ein bod eisoes wedi gwneud penderfyniad amdanyn nhw. Rydym yn gobeithio y bydd Tower yn newid hynny drwy adrodd straeon anhygoel am Butetown drwy leisiau’r bobl sy’n byw yno.”

Bydd rhaglen Jeremy Vine ar Radio 2 yn darlledu pedair eitem ddogfen fer, yn edrych ar droseddu, anabledd, aml-ddiwylliannedd ac adfywio, trwy fywydau pedwar o drigolion Butetown.

Meddai Jeremy Vine, “Roedd hwn yn daith hynod o ddiddorol i mi. Pan mae’r byd yn meddwl am Gaerdydd maen nhw’n meddwl am ardal fodern y Bae, ond fe aethon ni y tu hwnt i hynny i gymuned lle nad oes golygfeydd cerdyn post - yn lle hynny mae bywyd yn galed yn y tyrau uchel, ond gyda llawer o gariad a hanes wedi’i daflu i mewn hefyd. Croeso i Butetown, y wlad wnaeth y datblygwyr anghofio amdani.”
