BBC Wales and Sport Wales are today (20 September 2016) inviting people to nominate the best grassroots coaches and volunteers for recognition at this year's prestigious Wales Sport Awards.

The categories for nomination are:

  • Young Coach of the Year
  • Community Coach of the Year
  • Young Volunteer of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Coach to Disabled People of the Year
  • Lifetime Achievement Award (Community)

The Wales Sport Awards, hosted jointly by BBC Wales and Sport Wales, is the country’s biggest annual celebration of the very best of elite and grassroots sport.

Rhodri Talfan Davies, Director, BBC Wales, says, "The nation has revelled in an unforgettable year of Welsh sporting success, and it's absolutely right that our brilliant volunteers will share the same stage with our biggest stars at the Wales Sport Awards. We are asking everyone to take a moment to nominate someone who keeps Welsh sport ticking, so that we recognise the huge contribution of people who are volunteering their valuable time and expertise to nurture the next Gareth Bale, Jade Jones or Aled Davies."

Dr Paul Thomas, Chair of Sport Wales, adds: “The community awards are so important because we know the grassroots are the very heart of people’s journey in sport. The footballers and the athletes we’ve supported this summer all started their journey somewhere and had a first taste of sport that got that hooked them into a love affair with sport.

“In every corner of Wales there is a coach or volunteer who is giving their own time to support and inspire people to enjoy sport and enjoy all the health, social and other benefits that come with it. Often these people don’t realise how important they are, which is why we need to recognise and celebrate their achievements. It takes a few minutes to nominate someone, which is nothing compared to the efforts being made by your local volunteer or coach.”

Nominations for the six grassroots awards are now open at walessportawards.co.uk where you can also find more information about the categories.

Nominations close at midday on Friday 30 September.

The Wales Sport Awards will take place on Monday 5 December in Hoddinott Hall at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay.

The ceremony includes the presentation of the prestigious BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year award, and also Coach of the Year.

BBC CYMRU A CHWARAEON CYMRU’N CHWILIO AM ARWYR CHWARAEON AR LAWR GWLAD

Ar ôl i sêr chwaraeon Cymru ddathlu llwyddiant yn yr Ewros ac yn Rio yr haf yma, mae nawr yn amser i wirfoddolwyr chwaraeon gorau Cymru gamu ar y llwyfan i gael sylw.

Heddiw (20 Medi 2016) mae BBC Cymru a Chwaraeon Cymru yn gwahodd pobl i enwebu’r hyfforddwyr a’r gwirfoddolwyr gorau ar lawr gwlad i gael eu cydnabod yng Ngwobrau Chwaraeon Cymru eleni.

Dyma’r categorïau enwebu:

  • Hyfforddwr Ifanc y Flwyddyn
  • Hyfforddwr Cymunedol y Flwyddyn
  • Gwirfoddolwr Ifanc y Flwyddyn
  • Gwirfoddolwr y Flwyddyn
  • Hyfforddwr Pobl Anabl y Flwyddyn
  • Gwobr Cyflawniad Oes (Cymunedol)

Gwobrau Chwaraeon Cymru, a gynhelir ar y cyd gan BBC Cymru a Chwaraeon Cymru, yw dathliad blynyddol mwyaf y wlad o hufen chwaraeon elitaidd ac ar lawr gwlad.

Dywedodd Rhodri Talfan Davies, Cyfarwyddwr, BBC Cymru, "Mae’r genedl wedi cael mwynhau blwyddyn fythgofiadwy o lwyddiant chwaraeon yng Nghymru ac mae’n gwbl briodol bod ein gwirfoddolwyr gwych ni’n mynd i gael cyfle i rannu’r un llwyfan â’r sêr mwyaf yng Ngwobrau Chwaraeon Cymru. Rydyn ni’n gofyn i bawb wneud amser i enwebu rhywun sy’n gwneud i olwynion chwaraeon droi, fel ein bod ni’n cydnabod cyfraniad enfawr y bobl sy’n gwirfoddoli eu hamser gwerthfawr a’u harbenigedd i feithrin y Gareth Bale, y Jade Jones neu’r Aled Davies nesaf."

Ychwanegodd Dr Paul Thomas, Cadeirydd Chwaraeon Cymru, “Mae’r gwobrau cymunedol mor bwysig oherwydd rydyn ni’n gwybod mai’r gweithgarwch ar lawr gwlad sydd wrth galon siwrnai pobl yn y byd chwaraeon.

“Mae’r pêl droedwyr a’r athletwyr rydyn ni wedi’u cefnogi yr haf yma i gyd wedi dechrau ar eu siwrnai yn rhywle ac wedi cael eu blas cyntaf ar chwaraeon a wnaeth iddyn nhw wirioni a syrthio mewn cariad gyda’r gamp honno.

“Ym mhob cornel o Gymru mae hyfforddwr neu wirfoddolwr sy’n rhoi o’i amser i gefnogi ac ysbrydoli pobl i fwynhau chwaraeon a mwynhau’r holl fanteision iechyd, cymdeithasol ac eraill sy’n dod yn eu sgil.

“Yn aml iawn ’dyw’r bobl hyn ddim yn sylweddoli pa mor bwysig ydyn nhw a dyma pam mae’n rhaid i ni gydnabod a dathlu eu cyflawniadau.

“Dim ond ychydig o funudau sydd eu hangen i enwebu rhywun, sy’n ddim o gymharu â’r ymdrech mae eich gwirfoddolwr neu eich hyfforddwr lleol yn ei gwneud.”

Mae enwebiadau ar gyfer y chwe gwobr i hyfforddwyr a gwirfoddolwyr ar lawr gwlad ar agor nawr yn gwobrauchwaraeoncymru.co.uk ac mae mwy o wybodaeth am y categorïau ar gael yma hefyd.

Mae’r enwebiadau’n cau hanner dydd ddydd Gwener 30 Medi.

Cynhelir Gwobrau Chwaraeon Cymru nos Lun 5 Rhagfyr yn Neuadd Hoddinott yng Nghanolfan Mileniwm Cymru ym Mae Caerdydd.

Mae’r seremoni’n cynnwys cyflwyno gwobr anrhydeddus Personoliaeth Chwaraeon y Flwyddyn BBC Cymru, a hefyd Hyfforddwr y Flwyddyn.
