Special season of BBC Wales programmes to mark centenary of the Somme and Battle of Mametz

As part of a special World War One season, BBC Wales will broadcast a series of programmes, in English and Welsh, marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Mametz Wood.

As part of a special World War One season, BBC Wales will broadcast a series of programmes, in English and Welsh, marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Mametz Wood.

Across television and radio, BBC Wales will focus on the impact World War One had on the people of Wales, and highlight its legacy - still felt in Wales today.

On television, in Wales At The Somme: Gareth Thomas And The Battle of Mametz Wood (Monday, 4 July, BBC One Wales, 9pm) the rugby star discovers how his family’s life was shattered at the Battle of the Somme, along with thousands of others. During his emotional journey, he joins the first ever archaeological dig of Mametz Wood, and makes a discovery that could bust a devastating historical myth - revealing what really happened at the notorious battle.

In two special episodes of Weatherman Walking, Derek Brockway visits former World War One battlefields Passchendaele, Belgium, and the Somme in Northern France, highlighting Welsh connections.

Wales’ leading historian of women, Deirdre Beddoe, digs deep into the archive to discover the crucial role women played during World War One. In Welsh Women Of World War One, she speaks to people whose jobs today stem from those roles taken by women during the war, and explains how it wasn’t solely the soldiers on the front line who helped Britain win the war.

Actress Suzanne Packer presents The Forgotten Warriors Of World War One - the untold story of the black servicemen from Tiger Bay and across south Wales who left to serve their country in World War One but returned to face intolerance and race riots.

In Visions Of World War One, Kim Howells looks at how Welsh artists portrayed World War One - from the morale-raising prints of 1914, to the poignant memorials that still stand in towns and villages across Wales.

Writer Owen Sheers sets out to explain what makes the book In Parenthesis such a powerful piece of writing about war, and finds out more about the remarkable life of the writer David Jones. The Greatest Poem Of World War One: David Jones’s In Parenthesis is followed by In Parenthesis – The Making Of The Opera where cameras follow Welsh National Opera as they prepare to perform their brand-new opera, In Parenthesis.

Radio highlights include Y Lôn i Mametz on BBC Radio Cymru. Ifor ap Glyn, national poet of Wales, presents a three-part documentary where he follows the soldiers' journey to Mametz Wood, through the letters of Captain Dafydd Jones. Also on Radio Cymru, Stiwdio will feature photographer Aled Rhys Hughes, who has been recording the Mametz Battle site for the last six years. His work culminates in an exhibition at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.

On BBC Radio Wales this Sunday at 6pm, Weston’s Band Of Brothers sees the first of two programmes where Simon Weston focuses on the Welsh Regiment that fought at the Battle for Mametz Wood. And from 1 July, a series of news bulletins telling the story of what was happening to Welsh servicemen up to and during the time of the battle will be part of Good Morning Wales.

On 30 June, as communities across the UK come together to remember all those lost at the Somme, BBC News services will mark 100 years on from the eve of the battle, including coverage of the vigil held at The Welsh National War Memorial in Cardiff. And on the centenary of the first day of the Battle of Somme, live on BBC Radio 3 at 7.30pm, the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales present music by composers who fought or died in the battle, and works in memory of them.

Fel rhan o dymor arbennig am y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf, bydd BBC Cymru yn darlledu cyfres o raglenni, yn Gymraeg ac yn Saesneg, yn nodi 100 mlynedd ers Brwydr y Somme a Brwydr Coedwig Mametz.

Ar deledu a radio, bydd BBC Cymru yn canolbwyntio ar effaith y rhyfel ar bobl Cymru, gan bwysleisio’r dylanwad a gafodd - sydd i’w deimlo hyd heddiw yng Nghymru.

Ar deledu, yn Wales at the Somme: Gareth Thomas and the Battle of Mametz Wood (Dydd Llun, Gorffennaf 4, BBC One Wales, 9pm) mae’r seren rygbi yn darganfod sut gafodd bywyd ei deulu ei chwalu, ynghyd â miloedd eraill, ym Mrwydr y Somme. Yn ystod ei siwrne emosiynol, mae’n ymuno â’r cloddio archeolegol cyntaf yng Nghoedwig Mametz, ac yn gwneud darganfyddiad a allai wrthddweud chwedl hanesyddol a dinistriol - a datgelu beth yn union wnaeth ddigwydd yn y frwydr.
