It means news and sport station Radio 5 live will broadcast 144 Premier League games a season, including matches at Saturday lunchtimes, Saturdays at 3pm, Sundays at 4pm, and some on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.

The extension of the current contract means BBC Radio 5 live continues to have more Premier League games than any other radio broadcaster, and reinforces the BBC’s commitment to securing rights to broadcast major sporting competitions on the radio.

Jonathan Wall, Controller of Radio 5 live, says: “It’s great news that we can continue to bring our listeners the best live football coverage on the radio. We’re passionate about sport at BBC Radio 5 live, and I’m incredibly proud of the outstanding teams who consistently produce such insightful and engaging coverage of the Premier League.

Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport, says: “We're delighted with today's announcement. Live radio coverage is a critical element of the BBC’s overall football offer, and we know how much listeners love our live radio coverage.

“With an increase to 144 live games, fans will be able to follow the whole season on BBC Radio 5 live. This new deal is due recognition for the achievements of everyone involved with the BBC’s coverage of Premier League football.”
