BBC Daytime Controller Dan McGolpin announces his vision for daytime and new commissions for BBC One
Dan McGolpin, Controller Daytime, today announces his vision for Daytime and new Commissions for BBC One.

I want bold new ideas and returnable series that do something different to the successful shows that we already have.
Dan McGolpin says: “We have lots of returning shows on BBC Daytime but one of my biggest challenges is to create space for new opportunities. I want bold new ideas and returnable series that do something different to the successful shows that we already have.
"In the mornings, I want to make 9.15am more of a shop-window for us. It’s a place where viewers can engage with the world around them, and the slot benefits from a strong audience inheritance from BBC Breakfast. We can broadcast event series there like Big Blue UK or Operation Meet The Street, it’s a place where we can be ambitious and timely. I’m also looking for distinctive and engaging new formats or documentary series that can play at 9.15am or 11am."
"Mid-afternoon there are opportunities for new competitive formats, sometimes with escapist or indulgent qualities and I’d like to see more humour. Quizzes need to offer something beyond question and answers; they need strong entertainment values as well as strong game-play."
"On BBC Two, there is the opportunity to re-define the 6pm slot; there is broad audience available who would like an alternative to news and this may well include new entertainment formats.”
Announcements:
BBC One Daytime will be launching a brand new antiques quiz show, For What It’s Worth. The 25 x 45’ series, produced by Tuesday’s Child, is a strategic quiz with simple gameplay plus the tantalising play-a-long of guessing the value of really interesting antiques.
Fern Britton takes on the role as quiz master and will be joined by a different antiques expert each week. Over three rounds, three pairs of contestants will compete to collect as many of the antiques on offer, hoping to bag the most treasurable items and avoid the tat.
The Quizzer of the duo will be answering general knowledge questions in order to earn their antiques-buff-partner – The Picker – the chance to select an item for the team’s collection. Over the course of the game, we lose the two teams who have the lowest value collections, leaving the final team to select just one lot from all they have collected. They will have the choice to keep the lot, or be tempted to swap for a mystery lot. Either way, they won’t get the actual item, instead they’ll get the cash value - but have they spotted the high ticket lot? Or have they made a selection that is worthless?
Presenter, Fern Britton says: “My daughter and I love poking around in junk shops and going to local auctions. One of my most successful things has been a chair (about £60) with the Prince of Wales feathers on which was one of the many that the guests were seated on at the Prince of Wales Investiture in 1969. It was designed by Lord Snowden and I believe they were given to the guests afterwards. It sits in the kitchen with a Beatles cushion on it. It’s the cat’s favourite.
I love the idea of finding a priceless treasure and I love general knowledge quizzes, so I couldn’t resist the opportunity to get involved with For What It’s Worth. It’s just my cup of tea!”
Dan McGolpin says: “Tuesday's Child have created an innovative and entertaining new show for the BBC One afternoon schedule that will captivate viewers who have an interest in antiques and old objects, as well as those who enjoy the game-play of a good quiz. I'm delighted that Fern Britton has agreed to host proceedings, she will ensure that a good time is had by all.”
The Edge will also roll back on to BBC One Daytime with new host, TV presenter and BBC Sport broadcaster Gabby Logan. Logan will present the brand new 25-part series of The Edge - the gameshow all about quick-fire general knowledge and nifty ball control - as it makes a welcome return this autumn.
Whilst continuing to host live coverage of some of the biggest sporting events, Gabby will guide players on The Edge between the fine lines of success and failure, as each episode sees a new group of hopefuls risk everything and roll for victory.
Presenter, Gabby Logan says: “Having always loved quiz shows I'm so excited to be hosting The Edge, a genuine test of knowledge and skill. I can't wait to see how the contestants get on!”
Dan McGolpin says: “I’m thrilled to see Gabby Logan host the second series of The Edge this autumn on BBC One, she’ll bring energy, enthusiasm and a sense of fun to this sporting quiz.”
From the BBC Features and Daytime team in Wales comes a new 15 x 45’ series Fugitives: Home And Abroad. BBC One has exclusive access to the front-line police units seeking out the most dangerous fugitives among the 18,000 foreign criminals thought to be hiding out in the UK. The criminals are wanted in their home countries for anything from murder to money-laundering.
In a ‘criminal exchange’ Fugitives Home And Abroad will also have access to the Policía Nacional in Spain to tell the stories of the British fugitives who have attempted but failed to make a quick-getaway to warmer climates.
From enforcing European Arrest Warrants, to escorting offender on board the Polish military planes, we’ll see the painstaking work that goes into protecting the public, both at home and abroad.
Dan McGolpin says: “Fugitives: Home And Abroad will push the boundaries of what is possible in a daytime programme, we’ll be on the ground-level as highly dangerous criminals are tracked down and caught by the police, in Britain and elsewhere. I have full confidence that the BBC Features and Daytime team can pull-off this ambitious crime series.”
