The BBC today announced that its CBeebies Storytime app, which launched a new library feature in June, has seen over four million stories downloaded over the summer holidays.

We hoped our lovely library feature would be welcomed by parents as the app takes up less space on your device, but over four million downloads of stories in such a short space of time has truly exceeded our expectations.

Top stories include The Clangers Space Triangle, voiced by Michael Palin, and Little Red Riding Hood, voiced by Maxine Peake.

Over the summer the most popular time for families to download stories has been between 6-7pm weekdays, just in time for a bedtime read, and between 8-10am on weekends, ready for the fun-filled day ahead.

Just like a real life library, children can take out (download) up to 12 stories of their choice at a time, and when they have finished their adventure - whether it is with The Clangers, Charlie and Lola, The Octonauts, Show Me Show Me or something entirely new - they can return it to the Storytime library.

The library feature makes sure the app doesn’t take up too much space on parents’ smartphones, but still lets children pick from the selection of free stories that are available on the go - perfect for long car journeys or a read on the beach.

The Clangers Space Tangle story launched on the 30 July and it was the most popular story of that week. The top five most downloaded stories since the library feature launched are:

1. Justin’s House - The Flying Duster
2. Ruff Ruff Tweet and Dave - A Fairytale Adventure
3. Something Special - Mr. Tumble At The Park
4. The Clangers Space Triangle
5. Little Red Riding Hood

Kay Benbow, Controller of CBeebies, says: “We hoped our lovely library feature would be welcomed by parents as the app takes up less space on your device, but over four million downloads of stories in such a short space of time has truly exceeded our expectations. CBeebies Storytime is packed with delightful stories from some of our audiences’ favourite CBeebies brands, that families can enjoy whenever and wherever they are, perfect for any summer holiday or bedtime reading.”

The CBeebies Storytime app will welcome a host of new stories this autumn including:

  • Swashbuckle - Pirate Of The Year Awards
  •  Old Jack’s Boat - The Seashell Towers
  • Show Me Show Me - Stuffy’s Party
  • The Furchester Hotel - The Very Helpful Guest

The CBeebies Storytime app aims to engage children in reading and storytelling and is designed to help improve reading and listening skills, while encouraging ‘family learning’. It is available to download for free within the UK via the Apple iTunes, Google Play and the Amazon app store.
