Foo Fighters have captured the recording odyssey that led to their forthcoming eighth studio album with a documentary series of the same name - Sonic Highways.

Described by Grohl as a love letter to the history of American music, it features eight cities, eight episodes and eight songs. Timed to coincide with the band's 20th anniversary, Sonic Highways is not only about the making of Foo Fighters' most ambitious album to date, it is also a musical map of America.

Directed by Grohl, each episode chronicles the writing and recording of the eight-song album, in eight different American cities: Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Tapping into the musical heritage and history of each location, each episode features appearances from local legends who define the musical identity of those cities and culminates with the band performing the track they created there.

The series will start on BBC Four on Sunday 26 October (time tbc). Episodes one and two will broadcast on BBC Four, episodes three to six will be on the BBC iPlayer and the final two episodes will broadcast on BBC Four.

BBC Four Channel Editor, Cassian Harrison, says: “BBC Four is renowned for its music programming and I am delighted we have acquired this innovative series that takes viewers into the very roots of popular music, in an epic nationwide odyssey.”

Every city has a sound and every sound has a story. Explore eight of those cities on Sonic Highways this October.
