BBC Bristol At 80: exclusive Bristol screening of NHU’s Life Story, hosted by David Attenborough
The BBC in Bristol celebrates its 80th Anniversary today with an announcement that audiences will have the chance to attend an exclusive Bristol premiere of the Natural History Unit’s new landmark series Life Story, introduced by David Attenborough.

The special, one-off premiere will be held at the Cinema de Lux, Cabot Circus, 7.00pm for 7.30pm on Tuesday 14 October. The screening will be introduced by David Attenborough and followed by a Q&A session with the team behind the series hosted by BBC Points West presenter Alex Lovell. One-hundred-and-twenty-five pairs of free tickets are available from today via a ballot from bbc.co.uk/tickets.
Narrated by David Attenborough, BBC One’s Life Story tells the remarkable and often perilous story of the journey through life.
Every animal on earth is in pursuit of nature’s greatest prize - the continuation of its own bloodline through its offspring. The odds may be stacked against any individual succeeding, but each is born with a relentless instinct to overcome the odds. An animal must triumph again and again, over every challenge, if its life is to culminate in success.
The stories are shot to give the viewer a sense of what it is like to be an animal in nature, facing difficult choices and relentless pressure, highlighting the scale of the achievement for every individual who wins through in life.
The premiere screening of Life Story in Bristol is part of a series a series of programmes and events to mark BBC Bristol’s 80th anniversary on Thursday 18 September. Throughout the coming months there will be opportunities for audiences in Bristol to help mark the 80th Anniversary with a series of free events highlighting the range of iconic programmes made by the BBC in Bristol.
Tickets are already available for another event marking the 80th Anniversary, the opportunity to see Countryfile’s John Craven in conversation with Points West presenters David Garmston and Alex Lovell.
John started his career as a Points West reporter and continues his association with Bristol as a presenter with the hugely popular BBC One series Countryfile. Tickets for this event, on Wednesday 1 October, are free of charge and are available here.
On Monday 15 September, BBC Inside Out West featured a special report by John Craven looking at the early years and wartime history of the BBC in Bristol. This is currently available on BBC iPlayer until Monday 22 September.
John also goes back to his reporting roots with a series of reports on BBC Points West each week night from Monday 15 September to Friday 19 September tracing the development of programme making by the BBC in Bristol from the early years of radio, through to children’s programmes such as Animal Magic, to the rise of the world-famous Natural History Unit, through to today’s household names, some created and still based in Bristol such as Antiques Roadshow.
