Blue Peter announces winner of their competition to design a badge for British ESA astronaut Tim Peake

British European Space Agency astronaut Tim Peake announced tonight on Blue Peter (November 27, 5.30pm on CBBC) that a boy from Manchester is the overall winner of a competition to design a personal Mission Patch for Tim to wear as he embarks on the Principia voyage.

Thirteen year-old Troy’s winning design was chosen from over three thousand entries. The judges were impressed with the way that Troy’s design brings together some of the exciting and challenging aspects of the mission in one eye-catching badge.

As well as having his design turned into an official mission patch, winner Troy was also delighted to have met Tim Peake at The Science Museum in London.

Troy says: “ It was amazing to meet Tim Peake, such a great experience. I’m a big fan of all things space related. I did quite a bit of research before coming up with the idea but the actual design only took me about two hours.”

Troy took inspiration for his design from various elements of Tim’s mission. The globe represents the fact that Tim has said previously he has always wanted to see the earth from space; the apple was included because Principia refers to Isaac Newton’s principal laws of gravity and motion so Troy drew an apple because that is how he discovered gravity; and the rings of Saturn to represent the solar system.

Tim said “I have been so impressed with the high standard and the number of entries, wonderful! My final choice was not easy to make, but I chose Troy’s design because his patch was simple but included many references to my mission.”

Flying under the mission name Principia, Tim will be the first British ESA astronaut to visit the International Space station when he sets out this month. He will be living and working there for around six months.

The Mission Patch competition is a joint initiative by the European Space Agency, UK Space Agency and CBBC programme Blue Peter and was launched on the programme in September.

The judging panel was made up of Blue Peter presenter Lindsey Russell, Jeremy Curtis and Libby Jackson from the UK Space Agency, Rosita Suenson from the European Space Agency and Karen Oldenburg the ESA designer who was tasked with creating Tim’s fabric patch from the winning design. Tim chose the winning design and there were also five runners-up who will receive their artwork framed with a signed photo from Tim.

Ewan Vinnicombe, Blue Peter Editor, said "It's been fantastic to see all the thousands of colourful and creative entries we received for this Blue Peter competition. I was so impressed with them all and the winning design looks amazing. I can't wait to see it in space."

Blue Peter is a CBBC inhouse production which can be seen every Thursday at 5.30pm on CBBC.
