Glasgow commuters and Still Game stars ‘weclome’ the latest iteration of the Made of Glasgow campaign as it takes over Glasgow Central Station

The BBC have transformed one of the country’s busiest transport hubs as a giant ‘weclome’ mat arrived in Glasgow Central Station. The eye catching installation, inspired by the iconic mat from Still Game, marks the latest moment in the BBC’s Made of Glasgow campaign. The campaign celebrates the city as the birthplace of celebrated comedy storytelling, from the iconic Billy Connolly, to the fresh new writing in Dinosaur to the misadventures of Jack and Victor in Still Game.
Still Game creators and stars Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan attended the station this morning to reveal the installation and meet members of the public. Their much loved sitcom, set in the fictional Craiglang in Glasgow, has long been one of Scotland’s most beloved and recognisable comedies capturing the Glaswegian spirit.
Unveiled on Thursday 19 February, the massive mat greeted commuters, visitors and fans in a moment celebrating Glaswegian comedy, creativity and storytelling. The pop up formed part of the wider Made of Scotland campaign, championing the bold, funny and heartfelt work shaped in Scotland.
Running throughout February, the campaign shines a light on the creative storytelling that has shaped Scottish culture on screen and beyond.
Louise Thornton, Head of Commissioning, BBC Scotland, says: “Made of Glasgow celebrates the humour, humanity and originality of the city’s storytelling and today’s installation was a fun nod to one of our most beloved comedies that is unmistakable Glaswegian. The wider Made of Scotland campaign is all about championing homegrown storytelling and there was no better way to open the celebration than by giving Glasgow a suitably huge weclome.”
Greg Hemphill says: “It’s not every day you get to see a weclome mat this size! It gave everyone a great laugh and it shows how much affection there still is for Scottish comedy and storytelling.”
Ford Kiernan adds: “Glasgow is full of funny people and stories – and Still Game captured that. It is brilliant to be part of something that celebrates the stories made right here and I think Jack and Victor would approve.”
The BBC’s Made of Here campaign delivered its love letter to Glasgow on Valentine’s Day with a city-wide campaign designed to highlight Glasgow’s role in some the BBC’s much-loved programmes. In addition to the Glasgow burst, audiences across Scotland will see a new BBC brand film, Made of Scotland which draws from the best storytelling across Scotland and features titles such as Rebus, Highland Cops, Jules & Greg’s Wild Swim, Granite Harbour, Only Child and Banjo & Ro’s Grand Island Hotel.

Made Of Here is designed to celebrate the BBC’s commitment to supporting homegrown storytelling. With previous expressions being brought to life in Liverpool and Birmingham, it’s now Glasgow and Scotland’s turn to shine. The campaign was jointly produced by BBC Creative and BBC Scotland brand teams.
