Individual Philanthropy

Join the fight with us

Around the world, disinformation is rife, authoritarianism is on the rise and trust is in decline. At a time when 75% of countries do not have a free press, the work we do at BBC Media Action has never been more vital. Invest in us, and join our fight to protect trustworthy, independent media and information around the world.

Our work is only possible thanks to the generosity of individuals who share our belief in the power of independent media. Individual philanthropy plays a vital role in sustaining and expanding our mission — and we are deeply grateful to everyone who chooses to stand with us. We can't do it without your support.

Why is individual giving so important?

Individual giving is very important for our survival as a charity. We rely on our generous donors and supporters to carry out our crucial support across the globe. Much of our funding comes from restricted sources of income, such as the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, UN agencies and other government aid agencies. This funding must be used for a specific purpose agreed with the donor, such as a country-specific project.

Individual giving from supporters like you is crucial to our survival, allowing us to expand and sustain our mission and remain flexible as a charity. Without individual giving, we can't survive.

Why individual philanthropy matters

1. It protects independent media when it is most at risk

Around the world, independent journalism is under unprecedented pressure. Funding is shrinking, threats are rising and misinformation spreads faster than ever. Unrestricted gifts from individual supporters give us the flexibility to provide vital information to those most isolated and in need — even in places where other funding cannot reach.

2. It helps us respond quickly to crises

When extreme weather events, conflict or political instability strike, vulnerable communities need trusted information immediately. Philanthropic support allows us to act fast rather than wait for funding to become available, allowing us to train journalists, produce essential broadcasts and reach communities with lifesaving updates.

3. It amplifies local voices and skills

Our work is rooted in partnership across the world. We train, mentor and support local journalists so they can continue to provide reliable news long after we’ve stepped back from direct support. Individual donors make it possible for us to invest in people — building lasting skills, stronger media systems, and more resilient communities.

4. It fuels innovation

From climate resilience programming to digital media literacy and fact-checking initiatives, philanthropy enables us to experiment, innovate and create new ways to reach audiences who are most vulnerable to misinformation at a time when the digital world is changing rapidly.

5. It supports the foundations that make our work possible

Behind every trusted radio programme, training workshop or community broadcast are the core operational needs that keep us effective — from safeguarding and security, to research, technical expertise, and the people who ensure our work meets BBC standards. Individual philanthropy helps sustain these essential foundations so that our teams and partners can deliver high-quality, impactful media safely and consistently.
