Nathan Hamilton - Letting the people talk
updated 17/04/04
Nathan Hamilton Ask most radio reporters what job they’d rather not do and the Vox Pop comes quite high on the list of top ten hates.

Vox Pop translates as Vox Populi or Voice of the People and basically it means instead of interviewing one person with a series of different questions – you stop lots of people in the street and ask them the same question.

BBC GMR’s Gaytalk Reporter Nathan Hamilton regularly vox pops gay people on Canal Street to get a cross section of opinions on a particular issue for the Thursday night 8.30pm show.

Strangely, it’s a job that programme volunteer Nathan loves, perhaps because vivacious Nathan relishes the chance to be nosy and it’s an excuse to have a chat.

"I had great fun canvassing views on Michael Portillo’s announcement that there may one day be a gay Prime Minister which people were keen to share their views on. It’s more difficult to get people to talk about personal stuff like relationships and it’s also a tricky job when it’s dark, chucking it down or even snowing because people just won’t stop to pass the time of day.

"What I love about the job is that you never know who you’re going to meet and it’s amazing what you find out about people. It’s a great way of finding stories for the programme too."

In the 3 year’s Nathan’s been doing vox pops he’s also been offered free cups of chocolate, jelly babies, Easter eggs, and he’s even been asked out.. Not such a bad gig after all then!
