'Primetime' which features three exhibits will be at FACT from 16 January to 7 March and is the first time Melhus' work has been seen in the UK. | | Primetime |
Though he enjoys a high profile on the continent Melhus' work has received little exposure on these shores. The title piece is a reworking of the most famous talk show of them all - The Jerry Springer Show. The exhibit features TV's scattered across the gallery walls portraying the virtual TV host forcing confessions from his guests. In 'The Oral Thing' Melhus plays the role of host as a bizarre confrontation between two androgynous limbless figures takes place, in a piece which is both sinister and disturbing. | | The man himself |
Alongside 'The Oral Thing' is 'Weeping' a study of the presentation and style of religious television programmes in the US. Melhus looks at the seductive and manipulative elements used in the selling of religion. On 17 January Melhus will discussing his disturbing and challenging work with FACT Executive Director Eddie Berg. The discussion is a free event running from 2pm till 4pm.
