It's been a whirlwind week for Radio 1 presenter Jamie Laing, who just completed his Ultra Marathon Man challenge for Comic Relief, raising over £2 million in the process.

Running an astounding five ultra marathons in five days, it's a huge accomplishment for someone who hadn't run further than 25km before in his life.

Speaking to Radio 1's Jack Saunders, Greg James, and fellow co-host of 'Going Home' Vick Hope, he admitted that he had joked about raising £2 million when the challenge was first proposed to him.

He started the challenge in London, with his first surprise a flash mob of Jamie Laing lookalikes in Hyde Park.

On day two, he ran from Wyboston to Kettering, with donations taking a massive jump thanks to a scheme masterminded by Greg James, convincing listeners to donate to have Matt Edmondson's scooter crushed.

By the third day he was really in a terrible way, often talking to the ground whenever he had the chance. He was spurred on by the company of The Traitors UK Season 3 winners Jake and Leanne, who ran 8 miles with him through Leicestershire, and a surprise appearance from life-long friend and Made In Chelsea co-star Ollie Proudlock.

Other key figures that kept him focused, motivated, and frankly alive were his wife Sophie Habboo, fellow Radio 1 presenter Matt Edmondson and the 'magical hands' of his physiotherapist Nick.

To the disbelief of many, and most likely himself, he made it through the many hills south of Manchester, finally reaching the finish line in Salford with an euphoric sprint finish.

Citing mental health as the key reason for taking on the challenge, his mantra throughout has been 'one foot in front of the other' - a simple philosophy that has clearly worked wonders.

I've just asked Jamie how the experience of running five ultra marathons in five days has changed him.

"It’s made me more vulnerable, thankful, grateful," he tells me. "It’s made me realise humans are amazing and that life is beautiful."

So Jamie, what are you going to do now?

"I’m going to try and put my feet up and relax and not think about anything," he laughs.

  7. 'Being vulnerable is the greatest thing in the world'published at 17:31 GMT 21 March 2025

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

The big thing for me was just talking about your mental health. And it sounds so cliche but what is more important and more powerful is saying “I have anxiety”, “I have OCD”, “I have depression”, “I have insomnia”, whatever it is.

I've never really been honest about it. I have suffered, and I do suffer, and that's OK.

It's way braver to talk about it than not talk about it. This week has made me realise that talking about things is the coolest thing in the world. Being vulnerable is the greatest thing in the world. Sing it from a rooftop. Because that makes you brave and hiding it makes you weak. So don't hide it.

We were running the end with him as we weren’t sure if we had enough time to get here. And when we running over the bridge, I was thinking how hard it was. So I can only imagine what running an ultra marathon would be like. We had been listening all weekend, it’s made me cry and we’ve been emotional. We are really proud of him as well.

  10. 'The most beautiful thing I've ever experienced in my entire life'published at 17:16 GMT 21 March 2025

    Jamie Laing
    Radio 1's Ultra Marathon Man

I can't explain to you, the last kilometre was the most euphoric thing I've ever had. It was a really hard day today, so many ups and downs.

Greg running with me in a wedding dress was just a bizarre moment. I took a garter off his leg at some point.

At one point I thought I was down and out. Mentally I was gone, physically I was broken. I didn't have anything left in me.

And I don't know what happened, something pulled me out. Then we had this last moment here and running into everyone here was just the most touching, most beautiful thing that I've ever experienced in my entire life.
