You know what my little purple box has got?

BOOST POWER!

Its fast.
It’s pretty.
It’s smooth.

It was classic many moons ago, now it’s made a comeback onto the gameCube. Nintendo has managed to recreate the old magic of some classics onto its little box, Metroid Prime, Mario Sunshine and Zelda so far, with possibly more to come.

F-Zero on the super famicom set the precedent for fast futuristic racers. Its sharp control and turning mechanism allowed for accurate gameplay. The question was, was whether this could be done again. It has, to put it bluntly.

Ever since I stuck it on, my social life has gone downhill. Worst thing is, I ain’t even that bothered. Few beers and some hectic boost-powerin’ action is just fine by me. And it ain’t doing my chest pains and palpitations any favours, REALLY!

A genuinely fast racer with a very smooth camera, it looks stunning, the speed is maybe as fast as you could actually play on a racer, without it being plain daft.

There is so much colour, each individual level has a different colour scheme, using vast arrays of bright, strong colours. This gives a real sense of uniqueness as you progress throughout the game.

You’ll lose, and lose, but you’ll really feel like you can win the race next time. Even if it’s 3am and you gotta be at work early. It’s a real heart-racing ride. You will keep coming back to this game.

In one player the idea is to basically race and win and get points to buy stuff to help you do the harder levels.

Lots of ships to unlock, a story mode to unlock, at least 20 tracks plus bonus tracks to unlock, make your own ships, you can save your replays and that’s pretty much about it... Oh yeah, and you can play the best four player simultaneous racing game with no slows.

It does lose some track background detail but that is more than forgivable. This is easily by far the most impressive game like this on any format ever in terms of the feel for speed, in one, two, three or four player.

The controls are very responsive, it’s a matter gliding through corners hitting the race speed ups as you go, sounds easy, it is, sort of, but wait there’s something else…

‘OF COURSE’ don’t forget the ‘BOOST POWER!’

It’s a completely a different kettle of fish when you press that boost button down. The movement of the game remains completely fluid throughout, even at 2500kmh!

The air brake function allows the game to be a lot more forgiving on the frequent sharp turns. But you soon realise that the forgiveness evaporates on the expert setting. You will want to clock this game, and you will get your dollars worth, and it will last you for a long time.

If you’ve got a cube, you’ve gotta have this game.
