Although he was a supporter of the war in the years leading to World War One, Barlach's participation in the war made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his artwork protesting against the war. This created many conflicts during the rise of the Nazis, when most of his works were confiscated as degenerate art: "This illustration shows Christ in front of a field of thousands of crosses depicting enormous death and destruction. "Its inspires me to be thankful for my own existence, my life, free of conflict in many ways. I look at that work and think of the poor young men who died in their thousands." |
